I never had a tach on my Prius and never missed it. My RAV4 Hybrid doesn't have one either and I thought it doesn't make much sense on a hybrid. While playing with OBD, I monitored the ICE a bit and realized a tach is still interesting to have.

With my V6 RAV's slushbox transmission having a tach isn't as important as it would be if the RAV had a manual gearbox. After getting used to its RPM characteristics under various conditions I generally don't look at the tach unless I'm doing something out of the ordinary. In any event the engine's redline is pathetically low for a DOHC engine. So with a hybrid a tach also is less useful, and there are other displays which are more important.

My guess is you either failed defensive driving or never took the course...
