2000 model, Canadian spec, 4 door fitted with standard RS3000 alarm system, power locks, but no central locking button on the dashboard.

Problem arose when trying to program new remote fob.
Seemed to program ok, and when tried the remote, could hear the power locks operating.
However, when checking the doors found that only some doors were locked.

As had a similar earlier problem when using the key in the locks, went back to the owners manual to check correct procedure for using keys to lock (in case was making some mistake there).

Tried locking using key in both the drivers side door and passenger side door using correct procedure.
In both cases, all the doors locked except the rear drivers side door.
If observing the inner door lock button on this door when attempting to lock the doors with the key, its as though the inner button is "trying" to flip over (can see it move slightly) into the lock position, but something is stopping it ?
Incidentally if one sets the inner lock button in the lock position and then close the door from outside, this door will lock.

BTW, (in case it had any effect), did check that both child locks on the rear doors were set to "off".

So - any ideas on what may be causing this problem on this one door ? - seized linkage? solenoid ? whatever ? Guess I'm going to have the inner door panel off ?

I suspect that the problem on this one door is also the reason why the remote is also not locking all the doors successfully.

Further info and investigation.

Had the door panel off. Drew back the polythene sheet.
Checked for corrosion/seizure of the door lock button and connecting rods over to lock itself. Nothing.
Just in case applied light oil to all hinges and joints.

Checked all wiring for signs of loose cables or corroded joints. Nothing.
Just in case, gave wiring and plugs a spray with WD40.

Still the same problem.

Despite looking around, could not see the power lock actuator (solenoid?).
Guess it could be well hidden inside door frame up by the lock ?

Anybody give me a clue where it is and any other moves to be made to fix this problem ?

98 rav4. it happened just a few days ago that the driver side rear door could not lock either by remote (security system) or key. the same sympton as described above - attempting to lock but failed.

i guess it is the relay problem. the repair manual indicates the fuse and relay are under the inside driver area under the steering wheel, but i could not find them.

anyone know where they are (power lock relay and fuse panel?

thank you.

I have a similiar problem with our 97. the drivers door won't unlock or lock with the key fob switch, but it works fine with a key in the lock. and all the other doors work fine, so it is the actuator in the door. I have had the door panel off, and just how do you replace the actuator???.

I think, if it tries to lock, its not a relay, or electrical connection, but a problem in the door with the lock solinoid or lever/lock friction.

All the problems I ever ran into were caused by the lock actuator itself (solinoid), the lube in them dries out and they get stiff.
If you can get it apart to clean and lube it, its as good as new in many cases.
If its sealed, it needs to be replaced.
Sometimes you can find aftermarket units cheap, but they may be worth what they cost.....

As with anything in the doors, getting to things is the hard part.

Haynes, chiltons, or the toyota manual will show where its located, and maybe how to get it out. You will likely have 2 bolts and the linkage, the linkage can be the hard part, dont break the plastic clips most connect with.

I did an outer door handle in the old camry, that had 2 linkages, lock solinoid and handle to lock, what a pain...till you knew how to do it which was to put one linkage on with the handle partly out...

i did fix it for now.

i took everything apart and lube all the parts, also adjust the angle of the rod. it works fine for now.

a few thougths:

1. solinoid is fine. using 9 volt power tool battery can activate it back and forth.
2. the voltage from the wire is different to measure - too short to read. the multimeter only register about 7-9 volts when it moves, not 12 volts - that let me think the relay may be the problem. still, i did not fine where is the relays.
3. all the wires are good and consistant. all areas are dry.
4. i cut off those wings on those plastic hold to reduce friction as much as possible.
5. i use wd-40 to lube all connecting points.

anyone know where are the relays and fuses for power door?

when you use remote control to lock (arm) the car, does the trunk door lock?

is there a solenoid (actuator) inside the trunk door in 1999 RAV4?

my remote control lock driver/passenger doors but not trunk door.

thanks,

after a week, it gave away again.

i check all the electrical system and wires, so far, the voltage and connections are all right.

i believe the solenoid is the problem. the solenoid is disconnected to make it total manual operation.

i had difficult time to get this rear door's solenoid out.

the trunk door locks. must be a solenoid for trunk door.

when you use remote control to lock (arm) the car, does the trunk door lock?

is there a solenoid (actuator) inside the trunk door in 1999 RAV4?

my remote control lock driver/passenger doors but not trunk door.
