So has anyone else had the privilege of visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats? This is where they hold Speed Week, motorcycle races, filmed parts of Independence Day and do all kinds of car commercials.

Driving a uHaul from Michigan to Oregon this summer I made sure to stop there, and it was totally worth it. Here's a few photos from the journey I thought I'd share (all of these are here on flickr):

My bro and I arrived at night, and were too excited to wait for daylight to go driving out there. Pro: You can drive for miles without headlights, it's completely flat out there. Con: You can't see where you are, so we didn't know where the speed week track was. The salt flats are mudlike and flood naturally during occasion (to make them hard and smooth for the races they flood and flatten them with rollers). So my Rav got covered in no less than a hundred pounds of salty mud. Can't drive more than 30-35mph since you sink in an inch or two - lots of resistance. A recipe for disaster, but totally worth the fun.

The next day we came back, found the speedway, and got it up to 100mph exactly - the car was loaded with gear and mud so that wasn't bad.
I got a good amount of mud off after 15 minutes at a DIY car wash, then spent several hours washing off the rest once we got to our final destination. I am now exceedingly familiar with all the intricate details of the Rav4 frame and body - that mud got in many places I didn't know existed! PITA... but still worth it.
