Eg003-03 / sulfur odor from exhaust / 02-24-03

Introduction: Some owners of Toyota vehicles may experience a sulfur–like or “rotten egg” odor from the exhaust system. Sulfur is a natural component of crude oil from which gasoline is refined and the amount of sulfur can be decreased through the refining process. The amount of sulfur in fuel sold in California is regulated, however gasoline sold in other states can have substantially higher sulfur content. Sulfur content also varies considerably between gasoline brands and locations.

You wouldn't believe how bad this can get in the Sequoia. If the back window is cracked in the slightest, it will draw exhaust fumes in, and when dumping massive quantities of fuel on a hill climb when towing, the smell is quite strong.

Oh I believe it! What I don't believe is Toyota's response: Buy better gas! :wall

My Rav4 really stinks when I drive it hard. I can smell it with the windows rolled up and the air conditioning on re-circulate when I pull up to a red light. I will switch to Mobil regular fuel, that's some of the best gas I can get.

Dean, try this: I minimized the smell about 95% by stuffing a rag into each of the rear vents. The one behind the jack is a little hard to get to so I used a long screwdriver to help stuff the rag in place. Worth a shot.
