Seems to be the way of the future.

Eliminate a power consuming hydralic pump used for steering and replace it with a electric motor assisted steering rack.

Anyone hear what the long term reliability expectation of this new approach should be??

Must not be any problems.. 151 views and no comments..

System defaults to manual steering mode if a fault is detected.

"In case a malfunction occurs in the system, the fail-safe function stops the output current and reverts the control to manual steering. At this time, a P/S warning light illuminates to alert the driver of the
malfunction."

I remember reading in the manual that the motor may shut itself off if it heats up too much as a percaution. ex. Trying to park a trailer in reverse, all the turning back and forth might cause the motor to shut off, but will come back on after it has a chance to cool down.

So if in the future you do get the PS light, try letting it cool down for a bit to see if that fixes the problem.

FIAT haveing been using electric power steering for years without problems. In fact, it seems to be the only part of the series 2 Punto that didn't give problems. If FIAT can make it work, I wouldn't worry about too much about Toyota
