Extraordinary mileage in ECO mode

I decided to see what mileage this new Rav4 was capable of, highway only, varying altitudes, 80 miles out, and then back. I ran it in Eco mode. Went from 3,500ft, up to 5,000ft, then down to 2,000ft @ 55 to 70mph. I topped off the tank before and after. Previously we've only used Normal mode, with mixed town and highway driving resulted in 26-27mpg.

The highway Eco test delivered 37.4 mpg! The dash graph had been maxing out @40mpg which I considered to be impossible, but 37.4 is pretty darn close. So now we are leaving it in Eco mode to test combined driving.

Considering my Harley consistently gets 40 mpg, 37.4 mpg in this car is amazing.

I also noted that due to the lower Revs in Eco mode engine noise is basically non-existent. While performance suffers a bit you still end up with a silent car that sips gas. Not quite = to a hybrid ... but close.

I got almost 40MPG during a stretch through some mountain passes in eco mode. Very impressive.

Around town I’m not a fan of eco because of its quicker upshifts and less responsive throttle so it’s rarely used.

But on the highway using dynamic cruise control, eco mode is awesome. The car always seem eager to downshift and keep speeds close to the setting even going up huge hills. Thought it be lethargic and let speeds suffer a bit for fuel savings but that’s not the case. Does seem to struggle to keep speeds in check going downhills though and speeds overshoot a bit.

I personally do the same trip quite often, Ottawa-Québec and it's about 400kms. I tried both mode and they have been about the same but normal mode has yielded my best tank so far: 633kms, took 42.172L to fill up for a nice 6.6L/100kms. My average is 590-615kms doing this trip (6.8-7.1) it's about 95% highway at 117kmh (cops don't bother you at that speed)

I haven't noticed a significant mpg improvement in ECO vs normal. Mostly highway w/ a few stop lights and some hills. Either way, morning commute is around ~36 mpg, evening is ~39+. ECO might be slightly better.
Altitude is ~100 feet above sea level. Located central east coast of US.

You guys are getting some really impressive MPG. The best I've seen so far was during a 400km trip between Toronto-Hamilton-Niagara Falls and back and it was 8.54L/100km or 27.54 mpg. This was with minimal traffic and travelling around 120km/h or 75mph too.

Maybe I need to slow down and stick with cruise control? Hoping the mileage will improve as I put more kms on the engine, still currently at ~2700km.
