is their a hatch release the driver can use to open the back hatch, my hatch is manual, not the automatic one?

That's surprising. Even my 1981 Civic had a hatch release lever next to the driver's seat.

Only with the power liftgate option, there's a button just to the left of the steering column on the lower instrument panel.
