So I asked a few technicians about this at work today and none of them have seen this before. I believe it's some sort of safety feature, but I don't know what the purpose of it is and I don't believe there's a way to disable it.

I have a front view camera on my RAV, and when displaying the camera on the screen, it looks like this:

Does anyone know what that dark area is for? Look at the camera view on the left, there is this dark shaded area in the middle of the picture.

Anyone else have a front view camera and notice this?

I also looked in the owners manual and online and didn't find anything. Not sure if this occurs on 2016 models, would be helpful to know if it does or not.

I have a 2017 model aswell, and it's the same. But this is normal on all models, it's because how and where the cam is mounted.

It's just awkward to see that on the screen, and there's nothing covering the lens or anything. I guess I'll have to get over it

That center area is just darker than the rest of the image.
I'm wondering if that's there to reduce glare from direct lights/sunlight.
I noticed it's not completely blacked out area. After closer inspection in my 2016 rav4 hybrid, I noticed
the full camera view is still there just the middle section is a lot darker.

Yeah, the area isn't completely black, it's just much darker. Not sure why it's there though, and for whatever reason, there should be a way to disable it. It bugs me that I can't view a clear picture from my front camera

If you tilt your head and look up you'll have a clear view from the front of the vehicle. :D

Is this camera hooked up to a recording device? If no, what purpose does it serve, what option is it included with?

no. it is not hooked up to any recording device.

it does help with the parking assist feature, allows you to see how close you are to the front of the parking spot, also if there are any objects lying in front of your vehicle below the hood (a forgotten children's bike on the ground for example). it is not meant for you to be able to view while driving, the view will turn off at speeds over 6mph.

I'm thinking that maybe that causes a reflection for a camera that lets you see the top of the vehicle in the "bird's eye view."

I have a strong feeling that the darker area is there as a point of reference. It seems to be close to lining up to where you would ideally be able to see out the front window without using the camera. The area that is normal is what you can't see as well. and what you would mostly be using the system for anyways. I know it doesn't perfectly line up because this is an inherently difficult area to fill, given that people have different driving positions due to height and body shape, so I think they did it as more of a conservative area. Probably a lawyer somewhere saying that they don't want people driving around using only the front view camera, so make sure they know to look out their window to see what is in this area.

I have a feeling that maybe it's because it's wide angle camera on the front of the car, that's why it's blanking out that area for some reason?

Also, I've found there are some occasions when that camera is useful. Sometimes when I'm coming creeping around a corner where I can't see around, I'll use that as an extra tool because it can see ahead of where i can.

Also, have you ever tried to squeeze into a right turn lane, but you'd have to narrowly squeeze by another car and not sure if you have clearance? I've also popped this on then and it's helped immensely.

It will cut off at over 5-7 mph. Also, if you hit the "Auto" button, it will disable it from coming on unless you manually hit the button when you're in drive.

I assume it's for when you're in stop and go traffic (at night)... it somehow filters the tail lights of the car in front of you. I think without it we'll just see a big glare of light in the center of the monitor.

Your Toyota is equipped with several sophisticated computers that will record
certain data, such as:
• Engine speed
• Accelerator status
• Brake status
• Vehicle speed
• Shift position
The recorded data varies according to the vehicle grade level and options
with which it is equipped. These computers do not record conversations or
sounds, and only record images outside of the vehicle in certain situations

The pre-collision system is equipped with a sophisticated computer
that will record certain data, such as:
• Accelerator status
• Brake status
• Vehicle speed
• Operation status of the pre-collision system functions
• Information (such as the distance and relative speed between your
vehicle and the vehicle ahead or other objects)
Images from the camera sensor (available only when the pre-collision
braking function or the pre-collision brake assist function was
operating)
• The pre-collision system does not record conversations, sounds or
images of the inside of the vehicle.
● Data usage
Toyota may use the data recorded in this computer to diagnose
malfunctions, conduct research and development, and improve
quality.
Toyota will not disclose the recorded data to a third party except:
• With the consent of the vehicle owner or with the consent of the
lessee if the vehicle is leased
• In response to an official request by the police, a court of law or a
government agency
• For use by Toyota in a lawsuit
• For research purposes where the data is not tied to a specific
vehicle or vehicle owner
Recorded images can be erased using a specialized device. The
image recording function can be disabled. However, if the function
is disabled, data from when the pre-collision system operates will
not be available
