I remember reading an article about this quite some time ago and why car manufacturers set it up the way they do. I wish I could find it! I do remember it had a whole lot to do with the average consumer being stupid, not their words but, it was pretty obvious that's what they meant.

I drove my '10 Sport V6 around 75 miles after the low fuel light came on and still only managed to put in about 14 gallons of gas in the tank.
