There is normally a gap between the seats in the normal position and the cargo cover. All the small things that you put on top of the cover (such as a hat) fall down to the trunk. There was either an adjustable cover position or fixed seats in all other vehicles that I had, so that there was no such gap. Looks like Toyota RAV4 designers forgot about it...

Do you know about any cover extensions that could help to cover the gap?

Here is how the cargo covers look like in Europe. Very similar to what carav4 did.
