My Rav is an LE AWD, Japanese built, completed early to mid December '18.
1. Pronounced bump feeling and sound when vehicle is brought to a stop when it is operated in colder temperatures (approx. lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and before it has been running at operating temperatures for an amount of time. Typically, this does not occur after about 10 to 15 minutes of driving. This appears to be a “hard shift” into first gear, right as the vehicle is coming to a stop at approximately 3-4 mph. I have experienced this hard downshift in both the “eco” and “sport” drive modes as well as the default “normal” drive mode that I always use.
Additionally, I have noticed what seem to be hard shifts while driving, after the vehicle has been driven for some time. It occurs randomly and at various speeds and is somewhat subtle.
On occasion I still experience a “whiplash” type of effect in the drivetrain at lower speeds when either coasting, or lightly braking as if I might come to a stop, but then lightly accelerate instead. This experience was really bad during the first week or two of ownership. There seemed to be a lot of “uncertainty” in the powertrain for lack of a better description. The Toyota specialist that I just had an appointment with captured data on a test drive and told me the shifting issues occurred when the transmission was shifting from 3rd to 1st. I also experienced a dozen or so times that the engine “stumbled” as if it were going to shut off when coming to a stop, right before the vehicle actually came to a stop. This occurred whether or not the engine stop/start system was active. I have not experienced this “engine stumbling” after approximately the first week and a half.
2. Lingering odor that is NOT normal “new car” smell. To me, the odor smells somewhat like cedar wood, but is not pleasant. It is an irritant, where I’ve experienced a drying sensation and sometimes itching in my nasal passages. Others (family members, friends) have stated they can smell it, but do not think it smells like cedar OR typical new car odor. This smell appears ONLY when the vehicle has been running and typically with the heat setting between medium to high. It was very strong and unpleasant when I entered the vehicle for the first time for a test drive at the dealership. The salesman dismissed it simply as “new car smell” that would go away. This odor has dropped in intensity, but it is still occurring. On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 = no smell and 10 is the worst I’ve experienced, it is typically around 2 or 3, with it sometimes spiking at around 4 or 5. It’s not always noticeable.
3. Lingering burning plastic type of smell in the engine compartment. This odor is no longer always noticeable when standing by the front of the vehicle, but it still has appeared recently at lower levels. It appears to be coming from the front driver’s side of the vehicle, somewhere around the large fuse box in the engine compartment. This odor was very strong on the initial drive home from the dealership. After about 45 minutes of driving I stopped and opened the hood and was overwhelmed by a heavy smell that was like plastic that was actually burning. It seemed to be coming from the area indicated above, but I did not observe anything out of the ordinary. Over the next few days, this odor reoccurred on several occasions and was fairly strong, albeit not as bad as the initial occurrence. Since then, I’ve noticed it at least half a dozen times at low to faint levels. This could be linked to the unpleasant odor I’m experiencing in the cabin of the vehicle, or at least be drawn into the vehicle exposing me to something that could adversely affect my health.
4. Driver’s side mirror was replaced due to a defect that caused image distortion and difficulty viewing objects in the mirror. The replacement is better, but still exhibits distortion of objects, especially towards the top corner nearest the vehicle. The passenger mirror does not exhibit this distortion, nor does the driver’s mirrors on other vehicles I’ve driven.
5. The RPM needle twitches frequently (slight up and down motions) when the engine is started cold (approx. 50 and under). I did not observe this in the FWD model I test drove, or the Canadian built Adventure. Two other LE Japanese vehicles I test drove the other day while back at the dealership did exhibit this behavior.
6. Slight tapping or light knocking sound when engine is first started cold (approx. 50 and under). This does not seem to be the sound of the injectors; it sounds more like a mechanical sound that might be caused by excessive clearance or lack of lubrication. This noise goes away after 5 minutes or so of run time. The two other J-spec Ravs I just mentioned in
#5 exhibited the same sound. The 2019 Adventure didn't from what I recall. Is it a problem, who knows, time will tell.
7. Driver’s door lock sometimes makes an unusual noise when locked or unlocked. This occurs maybe 30-40% of the time. Instead of the normal, clear, crisp click/clunk sound you would expect, there is sometimes a rubbing type of sound from the driver’s locking mechanism.
8. Tens of thousands of “micro abrasions” on the windshield that are noticeable really only when the sun is low on the horizon (or any strong, concentrated light source is shown at the right angle). I noticed this a few times driving home in the late afternoon when the sun was shining right into the windshield. The micro abrasions scatter the light making it that much harder to see. Although I noticed this effect on the new ’19 Rav4 Adventure that I drove, I do not recall this on other newer vehicles that I’ve driven. This is typically what you would experience with an older windshield that has been “sandblasted” by exposure to many years of road debris.
9. There is a low whistling, or “moaning” type of sound that has appeared from the engine compartment about a week or two ago when the engine is running. It comes and goes and is definitely noticeable when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is idling. It seems to also occur while driving, but I am not sure if that is what I’m hearing. Either way, it is a bit annoying.
10. The hood alignment with the rest of the body panels leaves a bit to be desired. Essentially, the edges do not line up properly with the adjacent top edge of either the driver or passenger side quarter panels. It’s not horrible, but enough to be a bit “tacky”.
