How does one force the ICE to start/run in Hybrid?

2020 RAV4 Hybrid XLE...

I recently performed a DIY oil change at 14,000 miles. Before buttoning-up the plastic service hatch below the oil drain and filter, I wanted to run the engine and circulate the new oil thru the filter to check for leaks etc. while the front end was still up. However, probably due the warm ambient temp and the full state of charge on the traction battery, the internal combustion engine wouldn't come on. The only thing I could think of was to run the AC on full blast and turn on all electrical loads like rear defrost, headlights, etc. Only after 10 min, did the ICE finally come on. Does anybody know of a way to force the hybrid's ICE to start and run?

Thanks!

To have the engine startup and stay on, you need to put in into mainenance mode. You can google how to do it on a Prius as it's the same procedure but I will list it below. Give it a try.

1. Start by putting the vehicle in run mode without the vehicle started (either push the start button twice without the brake or turn your key to the second position before starting)

2. Press the gas pedal all the way down twice.

3. Hold brake and shift to Neutral. Let go of brake and press gas pedal all the way down twice.

4. Hold brake and shift to Park. Let go of brake and press gas pedal all the way down twice.
(You will get a traction control disabled as well as a code show up on the MID)

5. Hold brake and press the start button or turn the key to start the vehicle. The engine should fire right up and stay on. Just shut it off when done checking for oil leaks and letting oil circulate to get out of maintenance mode.
