You can add me to the list of people who've installed these OEM style fog lights. This write-up was a great assistance. It really helped in finding the non-OEM relay and knowing that I could use the factory wiring for OEM behavior.

My only issue I found was the wiring of the switch. Mainly the fact that people had different ideas/installs of the fog light switch wiring. The big issue I saw was that no one really knew what color wire on the switch was what. I mean no offense, but I've done lots of wiring, and I NEVER heard of a wire harness using Red wires for the ground, so I was skeptical of the switch wire descriptions listed in the write-up:
So here's my input to this install/write-up. To ensure that I would end up with the fog light switch wired correctly I disassembled the switch to view which wires went where.

Here's a view of the front of the circuit board:

And here's a view of the back:

So, as you can see above, here's what the wires actually are:

Red wire (on the top in the pictures) is the power wire which goes to grey fog wire.
Yellow wire is the ground wire (makes sense being a JDM kit, Japan and Europe often use earth colors (yellow, brown) as ground wires).
Black wire is the illumination wire which goes to the green wire on the dimmer.

The other red wire actually leads nowhere, despite being tied into the harness.
The light in the switch is very dim when illuminated, but I believe that's due to the LED being used and can't be helped using the non-OEM switch. The non-oem kit looks like the light is only used to indicate the fog lights are on, and not used with the illumination system which is how it's being used in this install. (I may try to track down the part number and price of just the fog light switch from the factory kit)
After seeing how the switch is wired and the installation recommendation in this write-up, I can understand why some people have had issues with strange behaviors. (ie. dash lighting occasionally freaking)

In final, my opinion is that the switch wiring install write-up should read as follows:

> tap into the grey fog wire with a Tap Splice, i think a red 22-18 AWG is best but not 100% on that, and insert one end of your fog on/off switch to the circuit. (if your ebay wiring is like mine, this will be the Red wire on the end of the connector.) make sure to zip-tie and secure the wiring cleanly along the OEM wiring path.
> connect the other lead from the switch to a good ground point. (if your ebay wiring is like mine, this will be the Yellow wire.) there's a good grounding spot to the bottom left of the driver's foot-well, just use a self-tapping screw.
> if your switch has an illumination light like the ebay, splice the illumination wire into the Green wire on the back of the dash dimmer knockout switch. (if your ebay wiring is like mine, this will be the remaining black wire.)

I hope this helps out previous and future people performing this mod! I wouldn't have attempted to performed this mod using OEM wiring without the information there was here already, so thanks to everyone who's done this and shared their experience.

As with the others who've made previous posts, I can't claim to be an expert and any modifications are done at your own risk.

got my fog light kits from Amazon. Can anyone figure out the wire for me? Please see the pictures:

1. The black wire on the top is the power wire which goes to grey fog wire?
2. 2 red wires are suppose to wired together then ground?
3. The green wire is the illumination wire which goes to the green wire on the dimmer?

Is it correct? Thanks!

I want to add BRIGHT HIGHBEAM HID lights to the rav4, but i dont want to mess with the light housing etc. So this kit/setup looks to be good for me. BUT, is this just for simply fog lamps? or would you say this is like adding HID highbeams to your car?

Excellent post and details. Is there any similar information for installation of external sport lights? I have a 2008 RAV 4 and have two Speed Tech W-400S Quad Carbine® Spotlight Off Road LED Work Lights to install. Thanks in advance for any help

Can someone please explain the working wiring instructions for using the OEM wiring to install after market fog light for 2012 rav4. There are 100s different opinions here. I don't want to read all those. I have black wire (ground), Red wire (hot) and a yellow wire in the dashboard switch. When I connect to wiring that came with foglights they work, but i want to use existing wiring in the vehicle. I already connected red wire to ignition key (as per manufacture recommendation, black wire to ground. However, I have no clue where the yellow wire goes. My understanding is it need to communicate with the for light and the switch, but do not know where to connect

thanks

figured it out

after going through most of the reviews and replies to original posting by Riot (great details, Thanks for doing it), I found my fog lights works well only if the red wire is connected to ground (-)ve terminal and the yellow wire connected to the light switch as explained by Riot. Before using OEM wiring I connected the fog lights to wires came with the lights to see if bulbs are working. For that red wire need to be connected to positive (red wire under the ignition key, see picture), black wire grounded and yellow wire connected as described by picture 1. It worked. However, for using OEM wiring order need to be reversed. red wire need to be the grounded (picture 2), yellow wire connected to the grey wire of the light switch (left of steering wheel, picture 5). It will work (of course you need to add the relay and the fuse. I already had a fuse on my fuse board under the driver side bottom of the vehicle, No 14 in the picture, FR Fog, sometimes this labelled as 26. check your vehicle manual, pictures 2,3). Fog lights worked when the low beam is turned on and the dash board switch is pressed. At this point it did not illuminate as I did not connect the black wire anywhere. It illuminate if you touch the exposed wire with your bare hand, so I connected it to the purple wire of the dash board dim switch (pictures 6,7). lights worked, I am not sure why the order need to be reversed, but it worked. Thanks Riots and others for great suggestion.

I added the fog light just by turning the wheel and accessing the compartment without removing the front bumper, easy and less work

The eBay seller RiVoT mentioned sourcing these from over 10 years ago in the original post is STILL selling the same kit. The wire colors still match perfectly. Mine came today. I need to change the bumper cover on my wife's '06 and this thread was referenced with the cover removal instructions - decided to knock out both at once.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the refinement of the instructions. I expect the electrical side of this to be incredibly easy thanks to everyone's work.
