I ran out of gas, then this happened...

So I decided to do a little experiment after reading a few threads about range AFTER the ReFuel message pops up. I kept some good log notes while driving and got about 65-68 miles of additional gas range. I kept about 3-5 miles of EV range available using the CHG HOLD and regular plug charging. Well I decided not to push my luck anymore and on my way to the gas station the motor shut off and switched to EV mode with a prompt that I should safely pull over in 3.1 miles. Luckily the gas station was only a quarter mile away so I wasn't worried until the Check Engine light came on with a message to visit my Dealership.

So the question to my RAV4 buddies is: 1) Did I break something? 2) Does anyone know how to reset the Check Engine light? I've seen some power cycle techniques which didn't work, and disconnecting the negative terminal which I haven't tried yet. I would like to avoid an unnecessary trip to the dealer if there's a DIY solution.

With all that said, I wouldn't run the RAV4 much pass 55-60 miles with the ReFuel light on. At fillup it took 14.42 gallons which seems very empty, although another fill-up I got 14.817 in the tank, but I was doing a road trip and topped off a little extra.

Any feedback is appreciated. BTW, the RAV still runs great. I forced the ICE to turn on and that was uneventful, so I'm hoping this is just a computer reset thing, with a lesson learned.

Thanks!

Makes sense. Since I didn't refill the tank with 15 gallons, there must have been a half gallon in there to play with. Maybe with the driving and fuel sloshing around, the pump picked up some air and caused a misfire. 72 is definitely pushing it, but doable under the right conditions....mathematically speaking.

If you allow Service Connect, the data is probably transmitted to the servers and then to the dealer that you selected. Other things that are sent to the dealer include maintenance needed soon (about every 5K miles) along with the current mileage. I don't know if all error codes are sent or whether it is selected error codes. Most of the dealers that I have dealt with do not do much with the information. However, it has been posted here by some that their dealer has contacted them when an error comes up. I don't remember whether the Service Connect disclaimer also allows Toyota itself to use the data, but I would not be surprised if they did.
