I've viewed this site quite a few times in the past looking up details about my wife's 96 Rav4. I drive a jeep, and I know how helpful forums can be.

Anyway, we really need to remove or move back her factory roof bars. They howl in the wind, and we have not used them in the year she has owned her Rav. Besides, I'd like to get a yakima system for her roof so we can move things from the jeep onto hers.

Anyway, the locks say 27. If anyone could help me with a key I would be very greatful, and would pay you for it through paypal or a money order. I've tried two dealerships and they were no help. Don't let me just joining this forum scare you...

PM me or email me at [email protected]

thanks!!

Look here for some useful information...
http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=410

The locks are actually really easy to pick, and if I remember correctly the lock cylinders (and rack bars) are interchangeable with the Yakima parts (but double check that one, I am not positive)

yeah, I saw that post which let me know I was on the right track if I could just find a spare 27 key. The site that thread links onto does not have information on it anymore, so I wouldn't be sure how to pick the lock at this point.

Thanks for the help though. Any more suggestions?

anyone think I would be able to get one if I emailed Toyota with the VIN?

Sorry about the dead link, but Kelly was right that his PDF link has the same info.
The quickest and easiest way to get the locks open would be a local locksmith, then buy replacement lock cylinders at any shop that sells Yakima or Thule racks. As I have mentioned before, the lock cylinders are the same as one of those two (Yak sks lock cores or Thule one key system google them for more info) and you can buy the cylinders, keyed alike, in groups of 2, 4, 6 or 8 and the cost winds up being about $10 per lock. Once somebody has the lock open you can easily (about a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10) swap out the lock cylinders for ones that would match the ones on your jeep.

When I was looking for a key to my locks, I went to a local store that specialized in roof racks. They let me try their key ring of keys for the locks and I wasn't able to find one that worked. All their keys would go in, but none turned. I also found out that both Yak and Thule lock cylinders come with 3 digit numbers instead of our 2 digits and they do not interchange (ie 027 is NOT the same as 27). The difference between the lock cylinders on those two brands is that the Yak locks have a small protrusion at the back of the cylinder that the Thules don't have, so they aren't interchangeable between the two. I am at work, and my rack is at home or else I would be able to tell you which one you need.

thanks for the great info. I'm going to try to get them open myself when I have the time, and if I do I'll get new Thule locks. After reading the posts here I looked at the bars some more and I can't believe I didn't see those were Thule made parts before.

Anyway, so I talked to the wife about it, asked her if she wanted a Thule fairing on hers like on my Yakima and she prefered that over other options anyway, so the 27 key issue may be a moot point afterall. I'm still interested if someone has one...

Thanks for the help.

Help! Does anyone have roof rack key #27?

Any luck in finding the key? I've got the same problem! Looking for the same roof rack key #27. Just won a used roof rack on E-Bay, but the set was not complete. Does any of you guys have a copy? Will pay you to cut a copy and send it to CA.

Looking for factory '96 roof cross bars key #27

Hi,
I'm in the same boat, looking for a #27 key for my '96 rav.

The links above aren't working, but I figure even if I figure out how to pick the lock, I'd need some tools, and then some blanks, so I'd just as soon find someone with a #27 and pay them for a copy, then have some spares made at home depot or sears.

Thanks for any help.

If they are factory locks, the # is on the lock (maybe the key too??) right next to the key opening. Thanks!!

Once you get the locks open, you can simply replace them with the Thule/Yakima replacement locks. I still haven't looked to see which one it is, but the lock cylinders are the same as one or the other of those two. The replacement lock cylinders come with a key for each cylinder so you won't need to get any spares made of them. Simply bring in the lock cylinder you have picked and you will be able to buy the right replacement.

Here is another lock picking website (or just google on lock picking) http://www.fortliberty.org/locks/secrets-of-lock-picking.shtml The locks have the wafer type cylinders. As the pictures show, a safety pin and a small screwdriver are all you need to get the locks open...
