So Ive been irritated as heck to have to plug in my phone every single time im in the car to get android auto. Tried MA1 and AAwireless dongles and they both constantly disconnect and cause problems. I saw that the new 2023 RAV4s have wireless android auto, so now im really curious if I could by the 2023 multimedia unit and instiall it onto my 2020 RAV4.

Has anyone been able to do this or think this is a good idea?

It should work, but it might be a problem to find one for reasonable price plus it should be in good cosmetic condition because frame of 2020 unit is not interchangeable with 2023.
Also it may be a risk if Toyota changed speakers/speakers configuration. In many cases it works, but shit happens. Here is a thread where people successfully swap Rav unit by unit from Corolla with bigger screen, but also one topic where swap was done by Rav unit from another region (Middle East) and it didn't end well.

Can you link those threads for me?

Another user posted this same question recently. Try using the search function.

Long story short, it is not plug and play, there any many generational differences between the 21MM Infotainment (2023) and the 19MM (2020-2022).

You would be better served looking for an aftermarket solution.

I have a 2023 with the 10.5 head unit. I don't know that it's any better. Android Auto often fails to connect, says unable to start, disconnects, etc. I think most of it is coming from the phone though so you may want to look into your phone as the possible cause of all the disconnects you're having.

Thank you so much for this info..... this changes my mind drastically!

The central console shelf unit you can buy has a narrow phone shaped slot on one side. I butchered mine to install a short 90 degree usb c cable at the back of it. Used 2 part epoxy resin and putty to fix the connector in place

Now on entry I slide my phone in the slot one handed, and do the opposite on exit.

Gives you the reliability of wired Android Auto and charging without the clutter and faff of 2 handed cable insertion.

I have the Carlin kit wireless adapter and I have no problem with it. It always connects. Getting a good wireless adapter is far less expensive than a whole new head unit.

Looks great. Have you mounted it somehow?

I used the Command Strips velcro. one to the side of the wall and one to the back of the unit. allows to be removed but also in sight to see that it is working. Some mount it to the top of the area same way.
No. Mine just is loose in the tray. I can tell it is working because I see the Apple Car Play display on the radio (I have mine set to Google Maps.)

Velcro sounds like a good idea though. I have an extra USB plug in the blank filler above the tray: Free Shipping Central Control Position QC3.0 Car Charger Lossless Upgrade Car Phone Charger for Toyota RAV4 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023
