Well, I made changes in my auto insurance right in the middle of a renewal so it is hard to say exactly what happened. I was at $880/year for a 2007 Pontiac Vine and a 2022 Rav4 Hybrid. No comprehensive on the Vibe, 500 deductable on the Rav4. My renewal for 2024 was going to be $1100. So that's 25% increase. F**kers. Ever get the sense that any of these mandated insurance plans are always going to screw you? Health, home, auto... like military contractors, cost plus, never going make less than the previous year.
I was told by a couple of insurance agents that 'the cost of parts has really gone up.' Yeah, funny how all these companies, all these industries, are such innocent victims.
Anyway, I sold the Vibe. Which loses me a 'multiple vehicle' discount. So the final for just the Rav4 is $980/year. Based on the previous split between the two vehicles, that's a 35% increase. And I shopped around and the best I could find elsewhere was $1300.
This is all Hartford/AARP. Call around.
It depends on what you are insuring. It depends on what deductibles you are willing to live with. It depends on where you live. Age, history of claims and driving record.
It also depends on the driving record of those in the same state and even location (often county).
It can also depend on how many others are insured with the same company near you (concentration of risk)
It depends on who regulates the insurers in your state. In NC the insurers just asked for up to a 43% increase for the coming year. That is their dream figure. They ask by county. They may change more than allowed if they give you fair warning that they are doing that.
The costs you all have cited above are chicken feed compared to mine. 81 and 78 years old. No tickets, claims or accidents in the past 18 years. 3 and 4 year old hybrids. 8k miles per car per year. Live in a gated community in a semi-rural county. Loyalty discount (40+ years), multi car discount, bundled insurance discount, good driver discount) Have house, homeowners, personal property, personal liability, flood (not flood prone), 2 cars all bundled)
Mutual company (insureds own the profits after the managers take their more than fair share).
Absolutely shop around.
And it is labor that has gone up. No one want to work in the crafts any more and few are trained. And what used to be a simple switch is now a computer. And that requires special training. Look at all that is involved in replacing your windshield and calibrating the stuff that looks through it and heats it etc. This isn't the 60s.
