Electric Cars make interferences in radio systems when inverter and motors are working. No good news for Ham Radio

Yes, but the problem is that whether I use the car radio or another radio I cannot receive AM radio. Up until recently I did not have a problem. So the level of interference has increased from what it was to a point where the AM radio no longer works. I is definitely not a problem with the radio. I am going to contact the dealership. Thanks for your response.

Broken ground strap on the engine or transmission that acts up when the power train moves when shifting into gear. I have had to replace several. Check all ground connections in the engine compartment for anything suspicious.

Interesting. Would I be able to easily spot grounding straps in the engine compartment? I was about to call the dealership but would prefer to resolve it without having to make the trip.

I'm pretty sure that the ICE block itself is considered a ground. Whether there are grounding straps to that is an open question, but finding one is unlikely. More likely that the head unit itself has an electrical issue.

The same issue occurs when I bring a portable radio out to the car. When the radio is tuned to a strong AM station and the car is in PARK or Neutral and running all is fine. When it is in drive the AM radio either portable or in car is just electrical interference.

I missed the important fact that your car is a hybrid. I think a ground on a shielded cable or inverter chassis has deteriorated if it worked okay before. Failed filter capacitors in the electric motor supply is another possibility. One other question; is the noise present if in DRIVE and the car is stationary?

Yes, the interference is the same whether the car is stationary or moving. If I put it in NEUTRAL while in motion the interference is eliminated. It only happens when the car is put into drive. Yes, this is a HYBRID Limited.

Yes, this is a HYBRID Limited. Since the car is under a zero deductible extended warranty, it sounds like it is time to bring it to the dealer with these ideas in mind.

The dealership said they need the car for entire day. So, I left with the car but I might get back to this at some time in the future. They said that diagnostics might run $300 and if it turns out to be rodents eating a wire, that is on me. I really don't use the AM radio for anything except for WBZ and I can get that over bluetooth. So, for now, this is on the back burner. If I had any other sort of issue along with this, I might be more concerned.

I'll add the AM radio to the Toyota GPS as another item on the car that is worthless. :)

Did you ever get this fixed? I am experiencing the same issue on a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid.

The AM interference could be a sign of the HV cable corrosion issue. The linked post has the english translation of the Canadian Toyota tech bulletin attached.
