I am out of warranty on my 2006 RAV but wondering if anyone has contacted the NHTSA about a possible recall action. I have been complaining about this for years but the dealer said it wasn't a saftey issue.A recent trip to the dealer seems to contradict this and they are saying I should replace.

Yeah, if it doesn't cause a loss of steering control, NHTSA will not issue a warning to Toyota. I had my intermediate steering shaft replaced back in April of this year--it would have cost me $409.85 without my extended warranty.

Have you tried lubricating it with a syringe? Others have also replaced the shaft themselves. Search on this forum and you will find the relevant posts.
