I have a 2012 Rav 4. I use the USB connection to connect my iPhone to the stereo. When I select Source and iPod to play music I get "Function not available" or it just seems to be stuck with the loading message. It just started happening this week. Worked fine before. Any ideas?

The first thing I would try is a new cable.

I have the same problem when I am connected via BT. If I unpair the phone, it will play via the cable. I have a powermat and it does it with both the case on with their cable and with the case off and the apple cable.

One time I was able to connect the cable to charge it and continue to listen to music via BT. But after I disconnected and reconnected, it stopped working again.

I tried some of the suggestions in other threads but nothing seems to work for me.

This may not be related to anyone's issue, but this is what I have learned. The iPhone will play out of the last mode selected. i.e. If you connect the iPhone to the stereo and play through the cable, then switch the stereo to bluetooth, the iPhone will recognize that as the connection and will stay locked to that mode until changed. The phone has to be told to play through the dock connector in order to play through the cable again. Using the Media button on the stereo to switch from bluetooth back to iPod will not accomplish this. You have to switch the stereo to iPod, then go into the phone and switch it from bluetooth to the dock connection. Unplugging the phone, selecting 'iPod' as the source on the stereo, and plugging the iPhone back in should accomplish the same thing. It kinda sucks that the stereo can't tell the phone to switch from bluetooth back to the dock connector when the source is changed.

Your response seems to answer my question. If your phone connects via Bluetooth, then you plug it into the USB connector, does your USB connector charge? My 2012 doesn't. If I plug it into the USB connector before I start the car, it charges. I'll try changing to dock connection on my phone and see if it charges then. Its only important when I travel and use my iPhone GPS, I like to have a full charge when I get out of the car.

It sounds like the head unit is shutting down the USB port when a Bluetooth connection is made. This is a poor design--they should just kill the data lines and keep the voltage lines hot.
