Base rav4 2009 4 cylinder. Occasionally get a loud bang from the rear of the car. It's as if something has wound up and then like go. Very loud bang. I get the feeling it is something releasing ie letting tension go. This is an occasional bang that is not related to bumps in any way. No rattling or shaking. I can't tell if it's coming from the rear Axle or suspension area. Seems to happen at lower speeds. Any ideas?

A possibility is a broken sway bar end link. Stand behind the car and look under. You should see 2 bolts sticking down, one on either side. If one is missing, that's the problem. They are in the red circles in this photo:

Omg yes the passenger side is gone! Thank you I couldn't figure it out. Looks like an easy fix. Thanks!

Good one Junebug! I had the same thing happen to me a few yrs ago except i noticed it while under my vehicle checking something else.They seem to be a weak "link" in toyota's Armour. :)
