Is this a new problem? Have new tires just been installed, or have they just been rotated? Does the wobble occur only while driving on the highway? It could be a wheel and tire out of balance or a tire which is not truly round.
Major shaking on the hwy
So I had major shaking down the hwy. It was like the death wobble ?. Has anyone else experianced this? I have had the shaking before but when i stopped it then went away when I started up again. This time it did it all the way home and I stopped about 5 times.
any ideas?
If it does it tomorrow on my way to work i am going to take it to toyota.

Does the steering wheel wobble? Is the wobble in the seat? Did you look over your tires and check your lug nuts? Did you recently drive in any mud or anything that could attach to the wheels and throw off the balance?
I have had the problem in the past after I cleaned my brakes but it went away after I stopped so I was thinking maybe that time was just the brake realigning.Is this a new problem? Yea it happens at around 90 km/h where its so bad I have to pull over. About a month ago I got my tires balanced.
The wobble is in both the seat and steering wheel. I will check my lug nuts this morning and my tire pressure just incase its a low tire. Since you've provided no clue whatsoever as to the year or edition of your RAV4, if you happen to have a 4WD version could it be the rear drive shaft is out of balance or the U-joints on it are bad?

Sorry I guess thats important info. Its a 2008 rav 4 4cly engine and is 4 WD.Perhaps a hanging brake pad on a rotor that's too thin, overheating and warping?

I checked the lug nuts and tire pressure all is good. Lug nuts are on tight and tires are full of air.
So just an update. I took my rav into toyota and they said they had a rav 4 with similar symtoms and hers was a caliber issue.Sorry I guess thats important info. Its a 2008 rav 4 4cly engine and is 4 WD.

I have had a caliper lock up before but not on my rav and it didn't really cause any shaking...this would be very easy to prove tho if it does it again...once it starts shaking going down the road immediately pull over (pay attention to effort needed to get it to stop)...once pulled over use the back side of your hand to touch all 4 wheels...if a caliper is getting stuck one wheel will be significantly hotter than the rest...could also be a brake hose collapsing and not allowing brake fluid out of the caliper...
There is no difference in the effort when pulling over. The brake did make some noise when stopping. Based upon the symptoms and your explanations, it would seem that the problem could be an out-of-round tire or wheel. It possibly have been balanced even if out of round without being noticed but still be out of round. And balancing should be dynamic, which is with the wheels and tirea being rotated at simulated road speed.
What do you mean by "cleaned my brakes"? Never heard that term before?I have had the problem in the past after I cleaned my brakes...
If a caliper is sticking rav4system's comparative heat test would find it but it has to be done right after you stop.
Of course the brakes should be rechecked to make sure all bolts are tight.
Another possibility is debris behind the rotors when they were installed.
The most likely IMO is what Blogson mentioned a tire problem - out of round, out of balance, a weight fell off, or possibly a defect such as a broken cord.
An easy DIY diagnosis is to swap the front and rear wheels and see if the problem moves.
About the only other thing I can think of is a wheel bearing going bad but that's usually accompanied by an lot of noise.
If it was my RAV4 after I ruled out the tires I disassemble the front brakes and look for a problem.
Tire separation is what was my cause for wobble. Most noticeable at slow speeds. I knew it was front related because steering wheel had wobble. It wasn't obvious, as in a goose egg,but the tread had separated about a 6 inchs long on the outer edge and was raised on the front passanger side. New tires and she tracks straight,no wobble.

Yes that is it from toyota. My car wasn't doing it when they got around to seeing what was happening. Its a very random thing. Also it hasn't done it since then. They did preform the touch the brakes to see if there hot test and the mechanic could touch the rotor with his fingers. So my brakes dont just get hot. But he did notice excess brake drust on the front driver side brake.
I know when I took apart my brakes before the caliber pistons were abit rusty but I cleaned them up and put the proper brake greese on them. I guess I will just need to service them again to see if that was the issue.
If it happens again make sure you pull over ASAP and touch all 4 wheels to see if one is hotter than the others.
