Has anyone experienced the same problem? I have a 2018 RAV4 Limited it only has 40,000 km on it at 39,000 km I discovered that there was metal shavings in the oil. The dealership told me it was OK to continue driving and just to monitor the problem. 300 km away from home the motor blew up leaving me stranded. The car has only ever had two oil changes done under warranty by the dealership Which was their recommended amount of time in between oil changes. Is this high of an oil change interval normal for a newer car and has anybody else had this happen to them.

You could send a sample of oil from the engine to a lab for analysis. Based on the type of metal that they find they can usually tell what component is wearing abnormally. Oil analysis is a routine practice for aircraft engines, helicopter drive system components, as well as for large marine engines and heavy equipment.

Somewhat confusing - has the oil in your vehicle been changed only twice since it was new? If so, the oil should have been changed according to the recommended intervals in the Maintenance and Owner's Manual. Metal shavings in oil are an indication that something is wrong and at your kilometers metal in engine oil should not be present as you are long past any engine "break in" period. Also, ordinarily any reasonable amount of metal particles should be removed by the oil filter before they can damage engine bearings and related components. IMO the dealer was negligent in their opinion as the situation you reported to them definitely is not normal, and suggest that you pursue the matter with them and Toyota Canada, and if that doesn't work then consult legal authorities such any provincial authority which oversees auto dealers, and with a court lawsuit if necessary.

What did Toyota say?

If the oil has only been changed twice since new then you might have an issue getting covered under warranty. I'm pretty sure the Toyota schedule for oil changes is 10,000miles (16,000kms) or every 12 months, whichever occurs first. I suppose it depends on the service date of the vehicle but it seems like this could be a problem. I can't believe the dealer gave you the OK to drive with metal shavings in the oil.

The OP’s Rav has 40,000 km on it, so with the recommended 16,000 km OCI’s, the oil should’ve been changed twice, and it’s midway to the next oil change. Being a 2018, it’s quite possible it’s within the one year OCI requirement as well. Seems to me the oil changes were done per Toyota’s maintenance schedule.

OP should ask for warranty coverage to replace the engine, as it’s well within the 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty.

Hence my statement regarding the (in)service date. Some 2018s were actually on the road in 2017 and if that is the case for the OP he/she will have a fight with toyota on warranty.
