Mic problems with apple carplay phone

Hello all,

I'm having issues with people hearing me when making phone calls with the USB apple carplay feature. I would say that the mic works only about 20% of the time. But the rest of the time people on the other end can't hear anything at all. I can always hear the other person just fine. Oddly, the Siri carplay feature always seems to work which is interesting because it uses the microphone too. Other apps that use the car mic also seem to work consistently.

I've tried rebooting my phone and updating to latest iOS neither has worked. I also very recently received an Entune software update but unfortunately that didn't fix the issue either. It also doesn't make any different if I use Siri voice commands to make the call or if I use the touchscreen to manually make the call. It also doesn't seem to matter if it is an incoming or an outgoing call.

Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

Thank you.

The transmit volume setting only exists when using bluetooth connectivity. I am using USB wired apple carplay, there is no such volume setting in wired carplay mode.

I just went out to my car and did a lot more testing. I've actually concluded that the microphone only works when calling people the very *first* time I try to make a call after the car is powered on. All subsequent phone calls no one can hear me. Unplugging and replugging the USB cable to the phone or rebooting my phone do nothing to resolve the issue. The only thing that works is to power the car off and then back on again. And then it will work for exactly *one* phone call.

Thanks for the link. I tried those options, but none of them worked unfortunately.

In addition to trying the options at the the above link I also collected some more data while I was at a family event this afternoon. I asked 3 different friends with iphones to try their phone in my car. All 3 phones had the identical issue to mine. That is, two-way communication would work exactly 1 time for making calls, but then after that the person receiving the call could not hear the caller. As stated previously the problem was resolved by turning the car off and then on again. Then it would work again *1* time.

Is there anyone reading this that is using USB wired carplay to make calls and had it work properly more than once after vehicle power on?

Next week I'm planning on going to the dealer and asking my sales guy if I can test this out in at least 2 other 2019 RAV4s to see if they have the same issue. I'm hoping that they don't then I can use that evidence to show that my infotainment system is clearly malfunctioning.

Regards

Just noticed the same problem. Tried both of my phones and my girlfriend’s phone. Tried all phones with CarPlay and without (using Bluetooth). Also, Siri doesn’t work and inaddition when hooked up with Bluetooth, trying to call someone by using the button on the steering while, your voice isn’t recognized at all.

My wife has called me once through CarPlay. About half of what she said was too garbled to understand. @Quickdtoo we gat an on-screen message saying we can’t connect a phone via Bluetooth if CarPlay is about to launch, then OK or CANCEL choices. I take it the car drops any Bluetooth connects when we tap OK.

FWIW: If you put your head unit into diagnostic mode following the attached .pdf, you would then be able to 'fine tune' the Hands-Free Voice Quality Settings as pictured above if desired.

I confirmed my RAV4 was set to the default 0000 value and works just fine so I haven't bother adjusting it.

Hi somms, it is really interesting the info you share, but I can't access with any of the proposed method to see service mode menu.

The issue I’m suffering is a really bad microphone reception of my Bluetooth hands free, It sound like it is overamplified and for the other side of the call, sound like I am speaking in an old and rusty microphone.

I think can’t access the service mode menu because my RAV 4 HV 2019 have a different AVN, the code my Multimedia center is PZ360-42104
143310

I was reading in other thread, and the issue could be related to the OEM microphone witch is amplified and the input to the AVN is already amplified too, so i need to enter to the service mode to modify the gain of the microphone input.
Some help? Ideas?
Sorry by my English, and thanks in advance!

With the RAV4 turned ON, cycling the headlights multiple times while also pushing down the 'audio' button on the head unit until the above menu pops-up is what worked for me.

If that method or any of the other methods listed in the .pdf didn't work for you It may not be accessible on your specific RAV4.

I am having the exact same problem. The system worked perfectly for about a month and a half and the issues seemed to coincide with updating my ios to the latest version. Could be just a coincidence. My local dealership tried to figure out how to fix the issue to no avail and have sent bluetooth info to Toyota in the hopes that they can tell them what the fix is. Has anyone figured out what the fix is?

Hi all, I’ve learned that these mic issues are related to the “Mayday computer” malfunctioning. My service department told me this happens on new arrivals and their “fix” before going to a customer is a power reboot by unplugging the battery for 30 minutes.

I think this is ridiculous as this has happened to me several times now and is related to the Remote connect services not working. I’ve taken my car in over 3 times now. 1st to reboot, 2nd to replace the computer, 3rd to tell me the previous guy didn’t activate it right and i have to do it. 4th upcoming because the activation still doesn’t work.

When I first took delivery of my vehicle I had to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to get my door locks to work correctly. I'm afraid to disconnect it again, who knows what won't work properly. Obviously disconnecting the battery isn't a fix as you are still having the problem. I really hope they figure out a permanent fix for this.

I'm having the same problem, but I'm not using Carplay. I have a Google Pixel 2 that is connected via bluetooth and the entune app. I normally don't plug the usb in, however.

It appears that the mic just doesn't work, I even jacked the output volume up very high in the system. I have an 19 XSE, no navigation.

Has anybody figured this out?

Does your remote connect feature work? If not the “mayday” computer is busted and you need to take it to the dealer. If your first visit, they will just unplug the battery for a reset. But that didn’t work for me and a computer replacement was needed.

I also am having problems with my mic where people cannot hear me after a recent app update. seeing all the difficulties people have been having with this makes me think the dealership service department is not going to have a clue what to do. If anyone has had any success, please post any details. Thank you!

I have found a work around which works well for me. Note that this workaround is specifically for CarPlay mode only. I do not use bluetooth. While this work around is a little annoying it does fix the car microphone (i.e. person I'm calling not being able to hear me talking) 100% of the time (at least for me anyway).

Basically all I do is toggle the speakerphone button on my iphone screen on/off one time after I make the call and it starts ringing. I actually figured this out by accident one time when making a call and it has worked for me ever since. Yes, it's annoying to have to toggle the speakerphone on/off once, but it sure as heck is better than retrying the call 2-3 times over and over until it works! Lol.

I hope this helps someone.

I am also having this problem, but only via USB/Carplay, and no problems via bluetooth. But the functionality of Carplay leans me to using that far more often, and if I know in advance I'm making a call, I disconnect, but when I'm driving and get a call, I don't think about it and just answer. I can hear them just fine, but they cannot hear me.

I have a 2019 Rav4 Limited Hybrid.

Its driving me bonkers.

I've had the mic problem as well...What I'm finding to be a much more frequent problem is that I have several apps on my phone that play unique sound alerts when they push a notification (Night Sky, Guitar Center, local traffic) and those sound alerts will cause my XM/Radio/iTunes to go silent until I unplug and replug the USB cable into my iPhone.
