I bought mine as a cpo and I bought the extended warranty...I'm covered to 100k or mid 2017....I'm at 50k miles and no whine so far...if you buy a cpo from a Toyota dealer you can still buy an extended warranty if over the 3/36 but only from that dealer...

If mine were to exhibit the problem after my extended warranty expires, I'd STILL pay whatever the costs to replace the transmission.

Would I enjoy paying that? No. Would I try to get it covered by some other means? Yes.

But it's still significantly cheaper than buying a new vehicle, PLUS (and more importantly) I'd get to continue driving a V6 RAV4.

Given that you can't buy anything today which matches the size/features/value/reliability/price combination of the V6 RAV4 to replace it, it would almost be a no-brainer to me to suck up the costs to be able to continue driving one.

Worth. Every. Penny.

If you bought it certified, why would you also buy an extra warranty? Or did I read that wrong?

Exactly why I'm going through so much trouble to find a good specimen, and the clock is ticking on the latest ones that fall under a warranty. One drive of the V6, and nothing compares.

I ended up returning the 2009 RAV4 Sport. It had the transmission whine and I couldn't live with it. I expanded my budget and bought a 2012 RAV4 V6 Limited instead with the works. Yeah...has the stupid spare tire, but everything else is sooo nice. I love it. Latest radio with bluetooth and USB too.

Behold: Autotrader Link

Best of all, no whiny transmission noise and it still has warranty. The previous owner hardly drove it! 14K miles.

Extended warranties are for VWs, Minis, BMWs, etc. CPO + Extended on a Toyota is all sorts of overkill/wasted money.
CPO plus extended warranty may not prove prudent but Toyota extended warranty with a "new" car has paid for itself twice for me. Two new V-6 water pumps & coolant. I paid for new belts. For the price I paid for it on both cars it has already paid off in spades.

^^ Up here in Canada, certified means safety checked, needed to change ownership and get license plates. Nothing to do with any extended warranty.
- unfit vehicles, can't be driven, until mechanics are brought up to specification
- good brakes, good exhaust, good tires & suspension, no floor or frame holes, blinkers & lights all work, no broken glass, etc.
Condition of motor (just not blowing smoke) and worn transmission, would be passable

valnar - Congrats on the very low mileage 2012 RAV4 with v6, you made a very smart purchase.
More $$ well spent.

Looks like it includes a minimum 12month/20,000km warranty up there.

I have a similar path like you before I bought my RAV4. I was shopping new car originally and not very happy about the headroom or visibility ( or feeling) some of the new cars. We almost settle down with 15 CRV touring, but the car salesman is a jerk and still playing the 90s "let me check my manger game" 4 times. My daughter was complaining she is hungry (she just went Pre school). So we left and went for lunch.

We went to Toyota dealership. Sit on the new Rav in showroom, my wife doesn't like the design. She claimed the engine hood is too high, blocking her vision and she doesn't like that. We saw a few Gen 3 RAV4 with good price. Test drive two of them and pick the 2011 version. It is still nice condition with 50k miles. The selling price is more than 13K cheaper than new Rav 4 limited. Also, I am trading in, so my sales tax was so low. 1.9 certified toyota financing, walk out with happy smile. I agree these Gen 3 RAV4 are like hidden gem. Everyone is getting rid of them and buy new generation because of the electronics. Be honest, I don't see much different gen4 and gen3 limited model electronic items. Anyway, love that you get limited version, it is a must when you buy toyota. They have a lot of nice features only offer on the top model. ( I know Nissan doing things differently which discourage the top model sales)
