Hey Everyone, I have just bought our RAV4. I am planning to perform a 1st oil change after 3000/4000km. We live in Canada and I am actually planning to keep this car for longer.

I know that these sort topics were touched up before but I am a little bit confused here :) I am coming from Mercedes world but it is a totally different story. For over 10 years I have been using Fuchs products in these cars and they were great. Now we also got a Toyota and I am debating to which oil company to stick with.

From what I was reading, Toyota Oil is a good quality oil however my dealer is quoting me nearly 17$ per quart :O I was reading some info regarding the Mobil1 oil, few people had few concerns about the "API SP Resource Conserving" etc. My simple question is, does using Mobil1 0W-16 in any way can void the warranty? I also read that Toyota Engine Oil has a different blend which can be better. Any recommendations from your side?

I just checked my 1st initial oil change bill after 2,5k km and my dealer used the Mobil Super 3000 0W-16 oil. Charged me 71 eur for 4,3 litres and that is with 20% discount included.
If it is the same oil you are considering then go with that.

Use the Mobil. Nobody can deny you warranty if you don't use Toyota oil. You will be fine especially since you are moving up your maint schedule.

Toyota blend better? I dunno about that. at 5k kms your Mobil additive package should be more than fine. I use Mobil in mine as it is easy to locate in my area and I think all the fancy stickers are on the most current bottles.

This is what I was thinking. I can get 5qts - around 4.7L, and we need 4.5 for the oil change - of Mobil1 0W-16 from Canadian Tire for about 65$ + tax or Castrol Edge 0W-16 for about 17$ per qts which is the same price dealer is quoting me :) Funny enough they were like, it will be cheaper if we will do the oil change for you as we buy oil in bulk - hmmm I forgot to ask about the pricing but anyway I would prefer to do the first oil change myself anyway :)

I applaud your desire to get it done right. Doing it yourself you will be sure what went IN and what was done. Bulk is not a sales point for me. I always think of the Simpsons episode where the Duff brewery had Duff, Duff Lite and Duff (umlaut) all coming from the same source. :D Am I dating myself? :D

In most instances doing it yourself allows you to put your money to better use by using better product into your vehicle with a lot less stress.

I mean, I can fix cars etc. but through whole my life soo far I was working only on Mercedes cars :) We moved to Canada and I decided that the best option is to get a new car in the time being as I did not wanted to be stuck with mechanics etc. and while we live in the condo as of right now it would be difficult to fix anything during winter on the parking lot :D So far I am very happy with the purchase and comparing Toyota interior quality to we say W177 which is the newest Mercedes A Class I have to say that A Class is pretty bad compared to Toyota :)

Do you know if Toyota will allow to sue your Mobil oil during their maintenance or they are strictly using their own oil?

you need to ask ahead of time what types of oils they have and what policy is if you bring your own stuff.
for sure you can request toyota oil in bottles and it may cost more.

is toyota oil better ? not compared to every possible option,
but it is very good stuff and it is what the engine is designed and tested with,
so there is no way to go wrong with it.

mobil 1 is good stuff. as long as the oil spec is same as stated in manual it's good.

I recently got 0W-20 Mobile full synthetic for both my Rav4 Limiteds at my local Costco. I got from Walmart a Boss (pureoil.com) cartridge. Oil about $30 for a six pack. Filter Cartridge about $10. Both for 15k mi service. We drive our cars about 5k mi a year being retired and no big trips but day trips. Been doing Mobile One since 2011 and no complaints. Important for me to replace oil yearly as mileage is not an issue. For my two cars materials about $75 for full synthetic oil and filters. 0W-20 is on the shelf. When 0W-16 comes to the shelf I will get it. Spend the money saved on good car wax and give it TLC. Cars know these things, trust me. I am in Cleveland, Ohio USA and we get cold, snow, sleet and everything inbetween and in summer we get the 90 degree days sometimes.

No, I changed with Mobil 1 several times at the dealership, no issues even when I still had my 2 year free oil change. Toyota will only change it once a year or 10,000 miles so if you want to change it every 6 months you'll have to pay. Now I just installed a Fumoto valve and change myself w/ Mobil 1 0W-16, Walmart sells it the cheapest.

ExxonMobil manufacturers Toyota engine oil and dealerships will even substitute with Mobil 1 if they're out of Toyota branded oil. Mobil 1 is also a partner of TRD.

Did anyone use Penzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-16?
Yes with an OEM Toyota Filter. I used to only buy Mobil 1 for all my cars however I found it flashes off on my older cars with lots of miles on them. I've since switched to Pennzoil Platinum and I'm very happy with it. I usually wait until it's on sale then buy it online. I change my oil every 5,000 miles or so.

Did you notice any increase noise while engine running? I have read some comments and some people reported that on this oil.

No, never heard of this one before. Unless someone's using a stethoscope, I doubt any oil would make a noticeable difference with engine noise.
