You probably have a pressure or temperature sensor that's either defective or not being satisfied. Jump them one at a time to find out.

my ac stwich doesnt light up at all?
Could be it is not a power-on light, but is telling you the system is broken.
At least that is the way it appears to work on my 1999 model, your unknown year could be very different from mine.

Dr. Dyno gave you a great answer for the little information you gave.
Was it working before you fixed it?
Has it worked since?
What did you see in the sight-glass when you tricked the system into working?

On all the Toyotas I'm familiar with, the A/C light comes on to tell you the compressor is AVAILABLE, but not necessarily running. A flashing A/C light would indicate an error or something is broken.

Have you checked the 10 amp A/C fuse (which BTW powers the light on the switch)?. I will investigate further after you confirm you have checked the obvious items.
