I bought my new 2006 RAV4 2.4L 5 speed manual Cruiser model (similar to US Sport model) about a month ago and have found that the transmission is very noisy, particulary in third gear both accelerating and decelerating. I have owned one of each of the two previous generations of the RAV in manual and neither of them had a noisy transmission. The engines were a bit noisy but not the transmission. It almost sounds like the noise made by straight-cut gears although I no this not to be the case.

I don't really want my new RAV to sound as if it has a truck gearbox in it.

Any ideas or solutions? The Toyota service people don't seem that interested at the moment!

I would give it some time to break-in. Then change out the fluid at 1000 miles. I've had good luck with Pennzoil Synchro mesh gear fluid quieting down noise and improving shifting action.
