I want to change my transmission oil, but as per instructions on youtube, level must be check when trans oil reach ~104F

To read the transmission temp I target to use my bluetooth dongle, but im unable to find a car scan app (android) that include trans temp. any suggestion ?

FYI I got it : Car Scanner ELM OBD2 on an android phone , it read the ATF temperature after you download the Toyota modules. It's free.

Thanks.
BTW ATF Temperature should be between 95 -113 degrees F (35⁰ ÷ 45⁰ C)

How different is a change of transmission fluid in ICE model v hybrid ?

I can say there are 2 big differences:

1. In hybrid models you can drain all ATF from transmission and replace it with fresh one with minimal material and time losses.
In non-hybrid models you can drain only about 1/3 of ATF. So you need to do multiple drain and fill or use flushing techniques.
2. In hybrid models setting ATF level fast and easy.
In non-hybrid models you need to warm up ATF to specific temperature using scanner or playing with OBDII jumper and transmission shifter... so setting ATF level here is more time consuming job.

Good morning
I watched a video on YouTube, it did the oil change over a 24 hour period. That is to say that he removed the bolt in the evening and all night the emptying was done.
The next morning he put the same amount of liquid to remove. I'd like to have your opinion.
And for the temperature of the ATL an LM 317. There are $16.00 and $50.00, could you give me a suggestion for a purchase and also which Apps to choose.

THANKS

It works until you accidentally spill ATF during draining process, or you have leaking transmission.
So if my rav4 is in a garage and in the evening I empty my transmission all night, I can put the same quantity back the next morning without problem?

Theoretically replacing the same amount of ATF with the same temperature should work, however in practice you can face some unexpected problems (ATF spill, shortage of fresh ATF, leaking tranny, wrong previous ATF level)... so it always good to know how to adjust ATF level from scratch.
Could you suggest me a Bluetooth OBD2 reader for reading temperatures. There are all prices. I think it's more the app that allows you to read what you need.

I have that app but how do you download Toyota modules? Is that just a matter of setting the car profile or is there something you specifically have to download?
I want to know which obd2 model to buy to have the temperature of the transmission fluid on my android phone.
Innova 5160rs used on eBay for 200$.
But it’s not a dongle cellphone app setup.

Yes, this is fine but only after you've done the temperature procedure once and have the proper level. I removed that plastic overflow tube and drain plug from my transmission and installed a Fumoto 104S valve instead since I will not be doing the temperature procedure again. I found Idemitsu TLS-LV fluid in bulk for cheap so now I'll be draining and filling the trans along with my oil changes every 6 months, which sounds like overkill but not when you consider the dealership will charge at least $300 just for a drain and fill.

After doing the temperature procedure, I put the new ATF bottles outside and let the engine cool down for 24 hours. Once both the ATF temperature and new bottles of fluid were 60F I drained again and exactly 3 quarts drained out. Those fluid pumps sold at O'Reillys are very unreliable and not able to get all of the fluid out from the bottom, so I used a funnel with a long tube instead.

Wow! Fumoto is everywhere o_O
Yea, the nipple makes it real convenient to attach a hose and drain into a container, so on windy days won't splash everywhere. And you can take small samples for UOA w/o having to drain everything if ever needed.

Good video but only watched first part. Although I will never change the transmission fluid on my R4H which will arrive at my dealers in a few days, here’s what I learned:
1. Change fluid every 60 to 90k miles or 6 to 9 yrs for R4 hybrids.
2. Use only Toyota fluid. Not all fluids are created equal.

Did I miss anything?

Non-technical guy here (but I enjoy cars): is it worth it for me to buy this ODB2 scanner and interface it to my iphone, for certain info about my R4H? The purpose for me as I see it would be to help me maximize gas mileage.

Perhaps there are other reasons to get the scanner. If you think there are other reasons for a non-techie to get a scanner, please reply.

Did the 3rd and final transmission drain and fill until my next oil change. This was the first drain and fill using the Fumoto valve and the plastic overflow tube removed. Drained out exactly 3 quarts in the morning with both fluids at 50F, then took it on a 1 hour drive in city stop and go traffic. Very smooth shifts, the trans. fluid temp stayed around 198 F and never went above 203 F. Used a total of 9.5 quarts. I was able to buy 20 quarts of TLS-LV for only $150, about half the cost of a single dealership drain and fill. The easiest way to fill is to temporarily zip-tie or use a velcro cable tie to secure the funnel onto a brake line.

I also have a Bluetooth LELink^2 adapter which should be able to read ATF temperature on our RAV4. The adapter costs $30, but you'll have to buy the OBD Fusion app for $10 as well as 'Enhanced Diagnostics' for $15 for a total of $55. I'll try it out and update this post if it's able to read the ATF temperature.

Edit: So the LELink^2 + OBD Fusion + Enhanced Diagnostics is able to read the ATF temperature and also has a nice highly customizable UI. It says it supports 1,000+ PIDs.
Went for a short drive and confirmed readings afterwards with the ScanGauge III.
