If I check the oil on my dipstick it's normally 1/2 - I top up to full and it quickly goes down to 1/2 (and stays there)

No leaks
No major oil burning (I have the little bit on start they all suffer from)

Could it be I just have the wrong dipstick and 1/2 is full?

Also why is the dipstick SO hard to get to down the side of the exhaust?

That, I think is your problem. The dip stick might not be from your RAV4 3SFE engine. RAV4.1 3SFE engine does 3.9 quarts of oil. I guess it is always in a flat even surface. Yea, the dip stick.

Just in case, check this.

The Toyota RAV4 1996 thru 2002 all models Hayes Repair Manuel [92082] says if you suffer of excessive oil consuming check

1. Oil pan gasket, and oil pan drain gasket bolt.
2. Oil Pressure sending unit leaking.
3. Valve cover leaks
4. Engine oil seal leaking
5. Oil pump housing leaking

I hope this help :)

Mine did the same..............going down to half. Its drunk about 1 1/2 litres in about 3000 miles.

Blows no smoke whatsover......found out today the sump gasket leaks, though bcause its falling directly onto the exhaust I couldnt see any leaks on the ground

And you are rightm unless the car is on perfectly flat ground it is VERY hard to check the oil level properly
