I'm not through beating this topic to death and would like to present more information on why the 10,000 mile oil change recommended by Toyota may not be right for you. There is only one way to know if a 10K oil change is correct for your auto, that is to have a used oil analysis done on your oil. If you go 10K and the oil analysis shows the oil has low viscosity, additive depletion, or a high wear rate your are going too far on it. Your driving habits and where you live are major influences on how far you can go before an oil change. If you do a lot of highway driving and live where the temperatures are moderate you may be able to get away with oil changes every 10K miles. Since Toyota recommends 0W-16 weight oil, and is going to 0W-8 weight oil and loss of oil viscosity is going to wear your engine much quicker. When the oil viscosity starts that low they have to put admiratives in the oil to make up for the lower viscosity, that is fine until your additives start to deplete which they do over time and more quickly under less than optimal driving conditions. Now people on this forum have said that they change oil every 10K miles and their car is fine, I say it would be better if you did it closer to 5K miles and no more than 7K miles. Sure, we all know the guy that smoked 2 packs of unfiltered Camel cigarettes a day and lived to be 90 but I bet if he only smoked 1 pack a day he would have lived longer. I recommend you go on YouTube and watch the videos by Lake Speed Jr. (the Oil Geek) who formulated oil for a living. I have watched many hours of his videos and have picked up lots of information from them. Now to finish up watch this video below of a shop owner talking about an engine full of sludge.
