I was just changing the oil in my 21' XLE and I thought others may benefit from this information. I use Wix oil filters and I found two options that fit nicely. The 51394 is about 2.98" tall and the 57145 is about 3.4" tall (either one will fit).

I have used WIX oil filters since the 1980s in all my cars and never had an issue with them. I would watch that bypass relief valve setting on the 57145--its much higher than on the smaller filter. Car Care Nut on YouTube has indicated that the electrically controlled oil pump and VVT mechanism in our 5th gen engines are sensitive to oil flow rate.

Why not just use OEM Toyota filters? They're of a known good quality and not really expensive. I order mine off of Amazon and generally get a discount if I order five at a time.

I just watched some videos in another thread below this one and saw the quality difference between the OEM and Wix. May switch to Wix.

Tazio, Good catch on the relief pressures being different. I will post an update if I notice anything suspicious happening.

This has every potential of voiding the warranty should the engine have a failure due to oil depravation. This is not something I want to risk.

Agree with the others here it's best to only use the proper sized filter. According to Wix website it looks like the only compatible filter is the 10332. I've always used Mobil 1 M1-103A since it's a synthetic blend whereas most others including this WIX is only cellulose. Not sure what the Toyota 90915-YZZN1 is made of but it's very cheap so I think it's also cellulose. I couldn't find a WIX XP full synthetic spin-on filter that fits but if I did I'd definitely use that instead. I avoid all K&N filters after watching a Project Farm video showing how much dust and fine particles are able to pass through its engine air filter.

I was going to use WIX however I was concerned with the size difference and wasn't sure about the relief pressure so I'm going to stick with the OEM Toyota filter. I change my oil every 5,000 miles so I'm not as concerned as when I was doing 10,000 mile changes on my Hondas. If I was going for extended intervals I wouldn't have an issue using the WIX or K&N since those worked well for me on my other cars. For such short intervals I don't see the filter failing and it was approved by Toyota.

There are tear down videos of the Toyota and Wix filters on YouTube. The OEM Toyota filter for our RAVs is really a crappy, very cheap POS and it is amazing it has such a good reputation. It is just yellow/orange cellulose and HAS NO END CAPS! Even the cheap orange Frams have cardboard endcaps. The OEM Toyota filer just has some sort of glue smeared at the ends of the pleats. The TRD Toyota filters for our RAVs have metal end caps. Internally the Wix filters look like the TRDs with metal end caps and the same sort of bypass valve.
