Well, I had the choice of a short wait and a $4000ish mark-up or a much longer wait and no mark-up. I went with the latter.
The problem here, is that there is no practical no-mark-up option for a RAV4 Prime XSE - the only places without a markup have waiting lists so long that they are not taking on more for the lists. And even when you're willing to pay a reasonable markup, the vehicles are very hard to find with no guarantee it will get easier.

Hi all, Sorry if I post this in the wrong thread.
I have an out of state proposal for a XSE trim, with nothing installed, port nor dealer, bared bones I might add.
Dealer is asking for ~56K for DO price. It's already included 5K mark-up.
Of course it's lacking the color I like (Blueprint) and popular pkgs (weather and/or premium). And I don't really need the car at this minute.
Question (1) should I sleep on it, holding out for better one comes along?
(2) They also have 8% rate for 60-mo financing, which I could get lower rate somewhere else.
Thanks for all inputs.
P.S. Mod, please move the post if not in the right spot.
Personally I wouldn't do that deal. If you aren't happy with the color and you want the premium package, you'll just end up regretting it down the road.

As for the price, the market is crazy right now so I wouldn't get overly hung up on that. A $5K markup isn't horrible in the current market.

Yeah, different in different locations. I probably would have just passed if mark-up was the only option.

I hadn’t even heard of the R4P until about a week before we bought ours on the east coast in June of ‘21. The local dealers in Colorado were asking $5000-$15000 at the time but when we expanded our search, we were able to find the exact one we wanted, arriving exactly when we were planning on visiting family in the area. The dealer we bought from did have the highest destination charge I’d seen at ~$750 but they were only about 20 minutes from our relatives’ house so I figured it was worth paying a little extra for the convenience.

I will say that without the $10,000 total in federal and state tax credits there would‘ve been no way I’d have considered buying this car.

Let me just. say that I’m a HUGE fan of the R4P (PHEVs in general) and I understand the reasons behind the car shortages AND that the demand has been great for all makes/models across the board but the prices people are willing to pay for this vehicle just boggles my mind.

Personally, I would hold off buying any new car for a couple years; even if that meant putting in a few thousand for repairs on my old car while I waited. I‘m believing more and more that we’re approaching a reckoning in the car market where people are going to be so underwater in car loans that they’ll either have to keep their cars way longer than they planned and/or there will be a surge in repossessions.

I don’t know, maybe I’m not giving the populace enough credit. Maybe new car buyers are all making bank. I just can’t see how 25% cost increases year-over-year can be sustained. Especially, when inflation has been rising across the board.

I sincerely hope that I’m wrong and people don’t suffer long-term because of the current market. BUT I also hope prices come down in a big way sooner than later.

edit
I realize the rise in value of used cars has countered a lot of the effects of the new car price increases. I mainly just don’t believe an average new car price of almost $50,000 is sustainable.

Just remember that MSRP stands for “Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price”. It has no bearing on anything really. The price your dealer is asking is the price the dealer obviously feels the market will bear.
Your decision to buy or pass on it depends on how badly you want that particular car. Not if you feel they are marking it up or selling at a discount.
IOW: What is it worth to you? What is it worth to you to have it now vs a year from now? Two years from now? 3??
Let’s face it, it’s a luxury irrelevant purchase…you want it, they have it, you are not in the driver’s seat here. Are you willing to wait 6 months to save a thousand dollars?

for example, what if you wanted to take your family on a trip to Europe over summer vacation when the kids are out of school, and it would cost $20K. But if you were willing to wait 6 months when the kids are in school and the weather is horrible, you would save $5K…and if you are willing to wait a few years until your kids are no longer in school and don’t want tobe seen with you in public anywhere…you save another $5K! Or just wait long enough until you are too old and infirm to be able to go at all and you save the whole $20K!! 😂

What is it worth to you? If you got the Jack, buy it now and enjoy it! My 2cents…if you can’t afford it, buy a used Toyota Corolla off a rental fleet (smart move) and rent a RAV4 Prime or a Tesla or Corvette for your birthday or whatever!

Our problem is that our main family vehicle, a 2006 RAV4 V6, is showing signs of age that include an occasional shudder from the transmission. We worry about it failing suddenly, maybe on a road trip (we do a 250 mile round trip to see family about every 6 weeks). The RAV4 Prime is perfect for our needs, and we expect to keep it at least 10 years, so we decided to go ahead with the $8.5K markup the deaier wanted (after waiting 2 months and finding the markups rising, not dropping). We should get it early next month.

We bought our R4P in January of 2021, it was a fully loaded XSE Premium with every option. The MSRP was $49328 including Shipping, and the selling price was $47645 not including Tax , Title, License. Other discounts included $1000 California Clean Air Rebate, and the $7500 Federal Tax Credit.

so does that selling price ($47,645) include that $8500 of tax credit/discounts?

No it does not, the selling price of $47645 is exclusive of tax credits but does include a dealer discount of $1683.

Well, looks like my unicorn (XSE Premium) has arrived at the dealership. Just a regular unicorn though...an XSE Premium at MSRP would be a magic flying unicorn. I might be able to pick it up as early as Saturday!

As mentioned, first mod will be wrapping the alien mothership speaker in copious amounts of weatherstripping to quiet it down a little.

Second mod will be a set of window vent visors. Anyone know how the Weathertech ones are for the Rav4? I have a set on my Subaru and have been happy with them so I'll be taking a look at those. ::edit:: never mind...apparently Weathertech doesn't make window deflectors for the 2023 R4P. Any other suggestions?

BTW, I'm assuming most mods for the R4P are the same as for any other Rav4, correct? Other than anything that might have to do with the powertrain and PHEV system but I won't be touching any of that.

PPF the bumper while it’s pristine. I didn’t and at 25k it’s got rock chips all over. Very soft paint. Hood, etc all look great.

One of the PIO options is the bumper overlay and the forced dealer add-ons includes paint and interior protection. Hopefully all that stuff will protect it from chips.

I paid 7200 over on my 22 and 5000 over on my 23.
Southern Ca. I only drove the 22 for 5k miles before it was totaled by a dump truck with me
In it.
I am getting the 7500 back from the 22 and 1000 back from clean vehicle program x2 rav4s so now I have a loaded XLE for 60k out the door less the 9500 from fed and CVP. So 50k out the door with carpool stickers (Must in CA) I feel it is worth it for me. I will have about 2500 miles by the time I fill up for the first time. And lately with traffic am getting about 50 miles on elect only.

For the added 5k I had to pay i received : paint protection film, alarm system with 20k payout if stolen within 4 years. And a few other minor parts worth about 700. No negotiations. Dealers are all linked on a website that shows above MSRP trends. It is a coordinated extortion scam.

I'm also in SoCal. Does the dealer take care of the HOV lane stickers or is that something I will have to do? Same with the $1K rebate from CA.

Sounds almost exactly like mine. Once mine is in my garage I will mention the dealership by name. Nothing against them, they have been honest from the start, just greedy and overly opportunistic, like every other dealer who sells R4Ps.

I'd consider my $4K dealer add-on package to be worth about $400.

Congratulations! Enjoy! And do tell what features you like most and least. Am interested in trading up my '22 XSE for the '23 XSE+PP myself, mostly I am interested in the cooled seats and the ability to use the traction battery as a location power source for some of my gear in the field. The other stuff like HUD and panorama roof sound cool too. Good luck and report back! :)

I'm actually looking forward to the 360 birds-eye view camera, HUD, digital rearview mirror, homelink (if it's compatible with my ancient garage door opener), 1500 watt outlet, foot activated liftgate (I carry a lot of bulky music gear like PA speakers), and pretty much all the other PP options.
