Powder coating vs buying new rims

3114 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Lindenwood
Hello guys. I want to do the powder coating glass black on my 18 inch wheels which costing 175$ per wheel. I feel expensive but there are new rims available for same price. What to do? Any suggestions on what to do. My budget is 400-500$. Is it possible to get it done near Boston area in that price range ?

Unlikely.

FWIW, I ordered aftermarket wheels and tires, in dimensions and an offset I truly wanted, and had them mounted and installed for a total of $900. I sold my factory wheels and tires (which the shop remounted for free) for $800.

Shop around sites like Amazon or bbwheels.com and you will be able to find lots of whole new wheels for $100-150 each, and then you can make some of that back by selling your factory wheels. That makes much more sense to me than shelling out $700 (or even your ideal $400-500) for coating stock rims.

Since you're changing to a common color it would probably be cheaper to buy new wheels and then sell yours. A set of Sparco Terras is $817 from Tire Rack so if the local market pays a lot for stock wheels it would be within your budget.

Black wheels on black cars is common though, if you're going to put the money out to powder coat why not go for something more unique?

Also have to figure in dismount remount and rebalance after powder coat. I think buying aftermarket or Toyota in the style you like used and selling stock is the way to go.

Thanks guys that helps.
I was back/forth same decision at end of day went w aftermarket. It came down to the wheels I originally wanted and why pay all this $$$ just so it can be stock. Plus powder coating you have to really know the vendors quality of work. I was able to sell my stocks to recover some of the cost so it ended up being cheaper than powder coating.

Cheap option is to just spray it yourself (Plasti/Dupli), lots of diy guide online. Some rattle can job, does look really nice. Even an air brush artist may make take the task, if you do not want to.

Maybe there is the hubcaps option.

Good luck, have fun!

I am considering this. Hope it sticks to Toyota's 'chrome'.
If u r picky about things DONT Plastidip. It looks good new but starts to chip and u will always be touching up. It starts to look nasty around the lip and inside lug holes. Go up close to some and u will see. Those that say it can be easily removed.. not really takes ALOT of scrubbing especially on corners. I thought about those wheel skins but nah it might look cheap.

Plastidip = poor man's black wheels. You already spent 25-30k dont be cheap.

I would honestly agree with a good spray paint. If you bought 5-6 cans of good paint (probably no less than 6-8CDN per can), and follow good prep instructions, you'll be good to go.
