I have a 2016 Limited that has a power liftgate that has made loud noises opening and closing, some times louder than others. Just to be clear this post is not about the ECU recall from a few years back.

The liftgate functions perfectly when under power. I recently disabled the power lift because of a hitch mount bike rack. I haven’t used the rack in a long time, but I swear when I did I was able to manually lift and close the liftgate by hand. It wasn’t the easiest but it wasn’t “difficult”. Today I felt as if I was about to break something trying to open it manually.

Occasionally it makes a horrendous noise when opening. This happened early on. The dealer of course found nothing wrong.

So my questions;
  • Am I crazy?
  • Should you be able to manually lift and close the liftgate?
  • Even if the power lift function is turned off?
Thanks!

I’ll answer my own question. Yes you can manually open and close the rear lift gate. I must have had dirt or something in there gumming up the works. Opening and closing the lift gate a few times broke the system free.
No comment on wether I’m crazy.
