adding TMC receiver by strados (post #44)

I also wondered why this could not be used. But the GNS support explained to me that all GNS TrafficBoxes which are fitted with a mUSB plug only looks like USB. They all have a serial interface with TTL level built in. That is because all PNA (Navigation) units are using their mini USB plug for power supply, for USB-Storage device function and additional for serial data transfer on TTL level. It's a tripple function combined in one plug. To connect a TrafficBox to the QL-RAV977 we need a regular USB data interface. Now there are 2 options:
1) Combining a GNS TrafficBox Universal GNS GmbH - Onlineshop - GNS TrafficBox Universal with MD6 plug 4037735101807 (that has real RS232 interface) with FTDI adapter USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT_5.0.
2) Using a GNS TrafficBox 5860 GNS GmbH - Onlineshop - GNS 5860 GPS RDS TMC Receiver Bluetooth USB (32-channel GPS) 4037735103924
Advantage of this unit: It has already built in Serial / USB Converter and so it is plug&play for the USB of QL-RAV977. Disadvantage is its price of 89,- Euro plus shipping.
I decided option 1) because of less cost. FTDI adaptor about 35.- Euro incl. tax and shipping from GB and GNS TRafficBox Universal about 15,- Euro off eBay.
That's expensive because it's a full GPS receiver and not only a TMC Box.
I think that this should be the right choise at a much more cheaper price:
GNS GmbH - Onlineshop - GNS TrafficBox FM9 USB2USB (mio A201, Transonic 3040) 4037735101845

it's usb
I finally got my QL-RAV977 (a bit deluded to be honest)
I installed the driver for the wifi dongle, and it works!
I created a folder in static store and placed the dll and inf there.
Then when the pop up came out asking the driver I typed the location, and everything went trough ok.
Thanks for your suggestions!!! Without you I could never make it up.
Now I have internet on my radio even if it is very very slow and this is not due to the phone connection. I tested it with my home wifi and the speed is the same.

I have then copied the following files in the root of my sd card:
mortscript.exe
CECMD.exe
Autorun.exe
Autorun.mscr (that I created)
set the navi button to run autorun.mscr and now what happens is that when I push NAVI, cecmd is launched, then iexplorer opens and the the navi program pops up. (cecmd is killed right after)
In this way you get the familiar task bar and the navi program over it.
I can not attach the files due to the forum limitations. If anyone wants the files, just write me an email.

About the TMC I have not yet decided how to go. However with Primo 9.2 I have not been able to get the traffic information from internet. I am sure that internet works because I can use google on iexplorer but Primo seems to not get the traffic info. I made a search with google from primo and, even if it takes forever, it came out with the info, and this proves it can connect to the internet. Any idea on why I do not get the traffic info?

I am deluded by the QL-RAV977 because of the steering weel commands.
Mt RAV has the phone commands on the right side of the steering wheel, and thy do not work at all. The only way to use the phone is to push the phone button and use the ugly interface.

I am still waiting for rear camera to arrive. I ordered one for toyota Highlander because I think it will fit perfectly to one of the licence light so making tehe installation very easy.
I will let you know as soon as it arrives.

For gomeliekv, how did you get the interface shown in the first picture of your first post?
Thanks

Sorry tom123, but you're wrong. This GNS TrafficBox has NO USB interface, even if its cord and plugs look like ! This TrafficBox only supports a serial interface with TTL level. The USB plugs are only used by GNS to match with the USB ports of all named PNAs and PDAs. I think it would be possible to solder the cord of this TrafficBox directly to pads RX, TX, GND and +5V witch you can find on the systemboard of thr QL-RAV977. But notice I didn't test this and you have to open the unit !
And about the price: Both TrafficBoxes you can buy for nearly the same price. For the additionally needed USB Serial Adaptor you also can use some other adaptors with included FTDI chip i.e. DA-70156 by Digitus. But notice it MUST contain the chip FTDI FT232RL or FT232RQ.
I have to apologize with strados.
He has been so nice to let me know many things with private email about how to get internet on my unit and I missed to mention him in my previous email.
Thanks strados!!!

So, to have TMC working on this navi, we have to buy GNS GmbH - Onlineshop - GNS 5860 GPS RDS TMC Receiver Bluetooth USB (32-channel GPS) 4037735103924 and nothing else? Is it plug & play (with correct drivers) ?

Or this:
GNS GmbH - Onlineshop - GNS TrafficBox Universal with MD6 plug 4037735101807
plus the converter MD6 to USB, right?

Nothing else?
Where did you find the 3 usb jacks? I'm able to see only the front jack.
Even with an external USB bluetooth dongle is not possibile to have tethering with a bluetooth mobile phone?

The GNS 5860 has a built in usb adaptor. So it's plug & play. Also correct drivers for WinCE 6.0 are available. Unfortunately yes it's expensive. But notice, I never tested this unit. If you order you do it by your own risc. In Germany this is no problem cause we can return each ordered unit within 2 weeks to the dealer with money back.

The TrafficBox Universal is much more cheaper than the GNS 5860. I purchased for 14,- €. But you have to add an usb-ser converter by yourself.
The GNS converter "MD6 to USB" unfortunately only runs with WinCE 5.0, not 6.0. I tried it and it failed. So the only converter which will run perfectly on WinCE 6.0 is a FTDI as i already posted. And additionally the plugs of TrafficBox Universal and of FTDI converter do not match. So one of these two must be replaced by a matching one. And for this job you have to solder!

This PS/2 converter is ok ? http://www.cablesdirect.com/prodimages/USB-PS2F_LR.jpg

usually it cost a 2-3$
This is not a converter with built in chip, it's only a unit with two different plugs! Nothing more.
Anyone tried Sygic Mobile Maps? Looks promising.
Could someone comment if this HU has these features:

1. Browse files on HDD connected via USB.
2. Play movie files store on SD memory, USB thumb drive, and USB HDD.
3. What file format (*.avi, *.mpg, *.mkv, etc) does it support?
4. Can it support DIVX, H.264 codec?

Many thanks.
Has anyone tried running other GPS software on the unit? I use Copilot Live on my Windows Mobile phone, and wonder if it might run on this QL-RAV977?

I could not figure out where to get CECMD and how to get it running from an SD card. Can someone please post more detailed directions for this?

I've running Navigon 7.4.3 with Premium TMC, iGO8 with TMC Pro, iGO Primo 1.2 with Online Traffic and google local search.
CECMD is Total Commander. Just search with google for "Total Commander WinCE" and you'll see many sites to download.
Can you post your sys.txt for iGO Primo 1.2?
Well, here it is.

Awesome, thanks! Are you using any custom skins like gj_ak? I've read it makes the experience much better.
No not jet but I also will try this. The default screen and map colours look boring. Not to be compared with Navigon.
