I have a 2011 2.5l 4WD......in the past month or so something has started to rattle when I sit at idle. I assumed like with every other car I've owned that it's the heat shield somewhere along the floor of the car and it's come loose. So the other day I had a look and I can't find anything that is rattling. Nothing is loose or touching the exhaust.

It doesn't happen constantly either, sometimes it rattles at idle, sometimes it doesn't, it's intermittent. If I bring the revs up slightly it stops.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Sounds like exhaust to me. Have you checked every connection including the heat shield more than once?

You need to take it to a muffler shop or mechanic. It is very hard to see properly underneath due to the angle. I had an exhaust leak on my previous RAV and found out there were several leaks in the exhaust but I could not tell from looking underneath the car if there was only one.

Once your car is up on a hoist examination should be easier.
