Hi

Im from EU Slovenia and i have a problem with my rav4 that you can hear in link below... This sound is heard when i just start the car and motor starts when motor stops sound stops. But when driving it can be heard when motor running or just gliding on electric.. It sounds like there is something grinding on something whining noise that doesn't change its hight of volume much. Toyota changed me water pump and air collector but thing stays the same.. If anyone has any idea what could this be please give your sugestions :) Ithink sound is coming somewhere behind the motor..

I have RAV4H 2017 XLE and I have exactly the same noise since 7-8k kms. I have 47k kms now and it's my companion since it had started.

The dealership I started leasing my RAV4 from didn't acknowledge the problem. The hybrid tech said "I do not hear anything abnormal" even though I left the car for 2 days there.

After some time, I went to another dealership (recently) and they acknowledged the sound right away. However, the guy told me that it's a normal hybrid sound and he had heard it before many times.

I decided to go to an independent dealership (they had good and honest reviews even though they weren't hybrid specialists). By using mechanic's stethoscope, they found the reason for the noise - it was hybrid power control unit (PCU). See the pic.

I decided not to buy extended warranty for the car (why would I if it's Toyota?) hence I'm going to visit probably my original dealership before my standard warranty expires (60k kms or 3 years), tell them about the issue and force them to acknowledge the noise and that it's coming from the hybrid PCU and make a note in the system.

Initially, I was planning to keep the car after my lease finishes (5 years term); however, I'm not sure at the moment whether I'm going to keep it or not even though I know they give 160k kms warranty for hybrid components here in Canada. And of course, because of Mazda3 Sport (hatch) was released last year :)

So if i understand correctly you found couse of sound but you didnt make them change your CPU yet? So actually you dont know if changing this unit sound would disaper? Why didint you make them change it right away when you found source of sound? When this Corona shit ends here Im heading to Toyota right away and they will change this asap. Now everything is closed in Slovenia - we are next to Italy and there is a disaster with corona virus ..

Thanx and please answer my Qs and Im buying you a beer if this fixs my problem.. im sending you cash via paypal for sure if this is reason of my sound! :)

It's actually PCU, not CPU :)

First, I found it out while being with an independent dealership. I didn't want them to change anything, only to find the source of the problem. I have to deal with the official Toyota dealership (remember, the first technician told me he didn't hear anything abnormal and the second one said he could hear it, but it was a normal hybrid sound) in order to perform any changes.

Second, I did the check just before the Coronavirus problem, so I'm planning to come to the dealership a bit later. However, I have big doubt that they are going to do anything except stating that this is absolutely normal sound for a hybrid car.

Before going anywhere, I would recommend to confirm that it's really coming from your hybrid PCU by using mechanic's stethoscope ($10, either buy it or go to any dealership and ask them about it).

If it's your problem as well, you don't need to send me anything :) I'm planning on coming to Europe (hopefully next year) and you can buy some beer there.

Well if you are coming to Slovenia (which by the way is nature pearl) i will be glad to buy you a beer! Well Im going to do a listening of sound today (i dont have a stetoscope) with a long screwdriver :) In my case they already admited problem because they already changed water pump and air collector... And whatever it is now they will have to change it that is no Q about that.

I'm not sure that a long screwdriver will really do the thing. You may try of course. I assume you may even try a regular medical stethoscope if you have one. Otherwise, just wait until the lockdown is over and go to your dealership and ask them specifically to check it with a stethoscope. Don't forget to update your experience here.

Hey buddy, did you check it with your long screwdriver? Did you get the sound? You may try to move over the surface of the cover of the PCU to get the exact spot of the sound, but you should hear it.

Hi

No havent had time we are in quarantine right now, we can go to shop but you need a mask and gloves to go in shop, we cant leave our city.. no time for sound :) i dont even drive these days.. but more i thinked about what you told me it made sense for me.. i suppose this is going to last a month or two more... If you have options make a stash of face masks and rubber gloves (you can make money on it also) :)

Best regards,

D.
