I was just driving, perhaps hit a pothole, heard a crack and rear left part of my rav4 '98 dropped a few inches. The piece of metal that the bottom of the strut connects to turned out to be severely rusted and gave way. Luckily I was driving on a residential street so I just parked it on the side.

I suppose my question is: that do I call this strut "base"? I am going to call a bunch of mechanics for estimates but I would like to give them an accurate description of the issue. Could this repair be too expensive to even try?

Thankyou!

Anyone who might undertake working on this probably would want to see the RAV first hand. With the amount of rust in general it might be time to look for a RAV in better condition.

I believe the part is the lower control arm. It can be replaced but I agree with Blogson. Have the car looked over for rust before "throwing good money after bad."
