I had my 97 Rav in for a certification (just bought it couple months ago) mechanic says the gas tank will need replaced soon, says its seperating at the seams around the sides, not leaking now but won,t be long.I looked when i got home and did notice the cover shield at bottom off tank has rusted apart from tank in a few places but actual tank dosent look as bad.Do these tanks hold up pretty good. Will it be rotten in the inside also.Is this a big job to change and should i bother. The car has 165000 kilometers (100k).Im afraid if i get into it with the rust i may open a can off worms.

There are reasonably priced, new replacement tanks, but also consider the ancillary parts, breather, filler tube, straps, gaskets.
Personally, I don't find replacing a gas tank a difficult or dangerous task. If someone could post a Toyota document showing parts and describing service it would be handy. I had no luck.
