Hello guys. Purchased a 2002 Rav4 with 118,XXX a few months ago and so far has been a great vehicle. After driving it for a while I noticed that when going downhill if I tapped on the brakes it would automatically downshift. Now the Check Engine light has been on for a few weeks even after replacing the two possible sensors it could of been. Doing a bit of research I have come to believe its the ECM.

Hopefully this doesn't sound like a dumb question but is the ECM the same thing as the ECU?

Also if I replace the ECM/ECU do I need to be grounded when I do it or are the boards not that sensitive?

Im definitely going to unplug the negative battery cable when I do.

Thanks for any help....

Ive came across several "replacement ECU services". I purchase one and after installation I send my old one in. Do all ECMs from that model fit mine or does it matter if its Auto, manual, 2wd, 4wd, 4 cylinder or V6?

they typically will require you to send them the part number from your ECU so that they know exactly what to send you.

when I did mine, I didn't ground myself and left the battery connected
