2002 RAV4 4WD

The connection between the resonator pipe and the inlet pipe to the muffler completely rusted off leaving the connection open. I did this quick fix using a 2 inch split flange. I think I need to buy a gasket to put between and some seal. I am getting Walker Exhaust Gasket Part No. 31332 and Muffler and tail pipe sealer. I am wondering if I should use a steel brush to clean the rust off. Any thoughts on the best way to proceed or if I am doing it wrong.

Thanks

On my previous 05 Rav4 I had the muffler shop weld a pipe between the two connection and a month later sold the car. It cost only $30.

I don't think a gasket will fix the problem since you can not seal it properly otherwise my muffler shop would have done that.
