Hi Everyone. So my rav just started this weird shaking/chattering at around 30-40 mph. It doesn't happen all the time and doesn't matter what kind of incline I'm on. It doesn't happen consistently. When it does it, it does it both when I'm accelerating and decelerating. Some times it's not as violent as others. I had my tires rotated, balanced and aligned about a month ago, this shaking is about a week old.

So I've gone through the forums and other sites and possible culprits seem like they could be torque converter, ball joint, or u-joint. Is there anything else I could be missing? I do plan to take it in to my mechanic, but he doesn't have any openings until next week, so I wanted to do some looking before then to narrow the possibilities ahead of time, and is there anything I can do ahead of time to help locate the problem? Thanks in advance for your guys help.

I'd check for loose lug nuts.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight, but would that cause intermittent issues with the shaking? It's almost a chattering.
Loose lugs can cause all sorts of weird noises. Any time a problem develops in the area where you've had work done (wheels, tires), that's usually a good place to start looking.

Checking the lugs is akin to checking for gas in the tank when the car won't start. :wink

Done and didn't help. It's weird. As i said, it happens when my foot is on the gas or the brake. happens again around 60+ mph. I've dropped in to 3rd and second, and the vibration has been consistent. There's no clunking sounds and the shifting is as its always felt. and it feels like it may be worse in the rear of the car.

Hmm you had it aligned recently. My thoughts go to the suspension components they touched in order to align. Did they forget to tighten the tie rods down properly? This is my first suspect.

Maybe i will take it to another tire shop in town and have them check. I did have them go through and balance and align it. No issues previously.

So I took it in to the local tire place and they stuck it up on the lift. Looks like a u-joint. From what I've seen, it looks like you need to replace the whole drive shaft? Any cheaper way to do this since it is a 2010 with over 100k on it.

You need to get a new drive shaft since the U-Joint are not replaceable. I heard the same noise twice which means I have to replace mine down the road when it gets worse.

I was afraid of that. So my next question would be, what would the average bill look like and if I have a lift, tools, and some friends that can come over and help, how hard is this to do at home?

The lowest one I found for the driveshaft is at PartsGeek $279. I called around in my area and it is $200CAD to install. You have to be careful to install it in the same position. There are youtube that show you how and you can judge if you can do it.

Yeah My local mechanic is telling me to plan on $800-$1000. New original parts, I know he doesn't like used parts and he tries to stick to original stuff. I was hoping to avoid throwing this kind of money in to a car I to want to trade in next year.

There are plenty of shops that specialize in U-joints and will gladly change yours out for a fraction of what a new drive shaft will cost.

So he quoted the job out at $950. $800 for the driveshaft and $150 labor. The price for the part sounds ridiculous to me. He's going to throw it on the lift for me tomorrow and see what else it will need. If I'm looking at new ball joints, etc, I think my wife and I are going to talk about trading in. But we'll see.

As far as replacing just the u-joint, from what I've seen, it's gotta be the whole driveshaft? The shop only quoted me out an hour to replace the shaft.

Jeez Louise, I'm trying to save you some money here. Google a drive line specialist or u-joint shop in your area and get an estimate. These guys got that "non-replaceable" u-joint replaced for a lot less:

I really do appreciate the help. To be honest, I've never thought there were garages out there that specialize in just u-joints. Obviously transmissions, brakes, etc, but never came across one that mentioned it specifically. I'll do some digging for people in the area that might replace it. I've had two garages tell me that they'd have to do the whole shaft so far so I'll keep looking.

You haven't seen enough. Check JB's links. Even you have to ship two ways you'll still be way ahead.

I got the same issue with mine, the driver side mirror is shaking at low speed and highway speed also. I went to my dealer and they told me that all the RAV4 2019 are the same. The torque converter on mine had the same problem, I've also brought it to my dealer and they told me to put my transmission to sport mode. They also said that Toyota know about the issue but nothing to fix it yet.

FRoy, your problem is different and is not a driveshaft problem. Most driveshaft problem have a worn out rear u-joint that cause shaking from the the middle of the car. If it occurs sometimes it is failing but has not failed completely.
