Shock option we discovered for the RAV4

Hey guys,

For those who want a nice cheap option for the RAV4 rear shocks ....

Try the KE70 Corolla rear shocks. These shocks are full gas, so a lot better for handling, and they are also 2 inches shorter, which is a BIG plus for the lowered guys. I put the on mine and it definitely stiffened the ride in the rear.

I used the Tokico brand with good results.

I'll check the shock for the part number in the morning

HORAY!

So yesterday my h&r lowering springs came in! so for a while I have been cruising with approximately 3-4 hundred pounds (lbs) in the rear to give it the lowered look. I made the call of going with the weight after reading threads about towing and how the rear looks like its sagging...

Anyways they are now installed and the car is put back together, although they still aren't quite low enough. The shocks that I bought and posted in this thread about a few pages ago are still "topping out", reaching their limit. As a result I am back to having the weights in the back of the car. (bummer) although I read up on the lowering springs, and everywhere says give them time, they'll sag lower. My fingers are crossed that with this weight in the back, the springs will drop low enough in a couple of weeks to get back to. The car looks the same, so there aren't any pictures of the car with the coils installed, but here are my springs :D

If you ever not satisfied with your stock shocks. Do the Bilstein Sport for the RAV4. Like the Eibach (which equal to the H&R springs) they with work great together. Problem is that those stock shocks will start to rock your RAV4. You'll see. Do Not do the Bilstein HD shocks with these springs.
Mensajero,

By chance, do you know the spring rates for a stock RAV4 and the spring rates of the Eibach and other brands?

Kirk
Not really, but I know that the Eibach & H&R springs are basically the same. The stock rate  Try your local Toyota dealer.

:? Then again...Their was once a dude in this forum that had various articles on "OFF-ROAD" magazine. He made some cool changes. One of the changes he made was the springs, suspension parts, even a splash aluminum guard.
Thanks,

I may opt out of upgrading the front spring rates and just install front and rear sway bars instead. I just want to dial out the "lean" in the front, while still maintaining the lift off oversteer in the rear, upgrading the sway bars front and rear should do the trick.

Who does the Addco F&R for a good price?

Kirk
Hello guys!! This thread seems inactive for years already hehe... :))

Anyway, I just wanna ask... To those of you who've been running on the shorter rear struts already, do you think the H&R lowering springs with 1.75" drop would compliment the said KE70 rear shocks? And in case I'll go with the KE70 rear shocks route, would it be alright when combined with the said H&R springs in front with OEM replacement KYB Excel-G shocks?

(Too bad I only came across this thread just after I replaced my old front shocks with brand new replacement KYBs. If I only knew sooner, then I've bought and installed the Caldina front shocks/springs combo.) So I guess I'd be sticking with the front KYBs for now...

I'm driving a 1997 3-door by the way, and planning on lowering it soon. Thanks in advance! :D
Hi, I've just fitted today new springs, H&R -30mm all round with KYB Ultra SR shocks all round, the rear shocks were about 2" shorter than previous ones but when the Rav came down off the lift, the shocks sat perfectly with the springs, not overly extended and not too far compressed.
I had a 35mile trip home from garage and Rav handles fantastically - wasn't crashy at all and took the bends with ease and could maintain speed (not that I was thrashing it or anything).
They are oil shocks, the previous on the rear were gas - to me the new ones are better ride - wether that's down to being a good match in length or being oil, I'm not sure but I can definitely vouch for this setup and they clear my 225/55/17 setup.
I can take some measurements from arch to wheel centre once I get it back tomorrow from exhaust fabricator if you want?

Are the rears KE70 shocks or RAV4 shocks? How about the fronts? I'm a bit confused. Sorry haha! :))

By the way, cool!!!! (Y) (Y)
They were listed as Rav4 items but fast road setup ie. For lowered springs.
Both front and back said max reach was 2" shorter than std. and they physically were too.

Oh I see... :) How about the wheel gap? How much wheel gap do you have after your new setup was installed? :D

Alright man. Thanks!!! ^_^
No bother, what size of tyre are you running?
We can work out difference from mine as I know my overall diameter is slightly smaller than OEM.

I'm running on 235/50ZR18s, smaller overall diameter than the OEM 215/70R16 if I'm not mistaken. :)
Hi,
I'm 75mm gap from top of tyre to arch and 740mm from ground to top of arch.
Would need to adjust slightly for your size of tyre, that's me with 225/55/17.

I just wanna say this is a great thread, but I'm still a little lost in what to buy to lower my Rav4. I think i'll just go with standard lowered King Springs (KTFL-43 and KTRL-44), so that's a good start. Then I was looking at KYB shocks but it's so hard to find any technical specs on them in order to be able to make an informed decision on what to buy.
And it's even more confusing with things like this - TOYOTA RAV4 SXA11R 94-00 KYB SHOCK ABSORBERS KIT & 30MM LOW KING SPRINGS | eBay - where they've included the low king springs and (from what I can tell) the stock shocks. One person told me they're running these - Bilstein Monotube Shock Absorbers and Struts | 34-030615 | Bilstein - but the travel on those is so much less than the KYB's... so confused.
I want to buy from Rock Auto as I need to put in an order in the next week for my other car (Pontiac) and figure I may as well maximise the postage, but I just have no idea what to buy. At the moment I have KYB 343272 and 365093 in my shopping cart but I'm fairly sure these are stock shocks and I don't think that's the best way to go. Any help anyone can provide is much appreciated!
