Good to hear that!, that flywheel was not looking good when you got started but came up good on the grinder!

the smell, as Dr.Dyno says, is probably oily handprints on the exhaust, I had that happen on my RAV when the clutch was done (had to disconnect the cooler lines)

Could be a sticky throttle body? if the RPM stays high after you back off, the throttle plate is not closing in time. it could also explain the lack of throttle response too.

A can of carburetor cleaner and 20mins of your time is all you will need if you find its sticky (work the throttle by hand to rule out a rusted throttle cable too)
My automatic has the same problem....mechanic said she's fine but the sluggishness uphill and slow acceleration continues.
