I got my RAV a month and a half ago and was wondering how to check the 2wd auto trans fluid level. I don't have the owners manual and tried to do a search here and on google but couldn't find the procedure.

I haven't had a auto tranny since 1990 so I am a bit rusty. The last car I owned needed the engine to be running while checking the level.

OK stupid question time. Does the 4.1 RAV need the engine running or off while checking the level?

As far as I know, every auto has to have the engine running to get an accurate reading on the trans. fluid. Can't see why our Rav's would be any different.

Drive the vehicle and get the engine and transmission up to operating temperature. Park where it's flat, leave the engine idling, and move the gearshift all the way from P down to L and then back to P. Put the parking brake on, then check the ATF dipstick under the hood. The fluid level should be at the HOT mark.
