I seem to get all the cumulative data, tire pressure, emission data ect.. when trying to get live data to check trans temp and other engine etc data i get a fatal error message. Do i need the 2.0.4 MVCI or is 1.4.1 adequate. Trying to figure out my issue, i am running tech stream version 12.20.084 windows 10 64bit, any info on this subject would be great i just need to check trans fluid and i need to see temp to do this.

I have a 2017 Rav4 and I tried three different dongles and loaded the software under Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows 10 and I could not read live data, I contacted the seller and they could not help me. I returned the software. You have to remember this is $3000.00 software and for $20.00 it is going to be hit or miss.

So..... after trying the innova 5510 obd tool which states it can check transmission temp, it cannot. I returned it. I have come up with a decent idea, there is an external water to oil trans cooler on the transmission housing, the feed line to the cooler theoretically will be at current transmission temp as that is where its added on a lot of trans cooler set ups, the return will obviously be too cool to get accurate temp, I am going to cut the feed line and put in a 7/16 or "whatever size hose it is" barb tee with NPT 1/8' for temp sensor, and add an after market digital oil temp gauge, parts are under $50 " amazon" and its a good way to bypass taking it to the dealership. I am going to test this method, you could even devise a tool from the temp gauge and plumbing tee to use as a technician. However, I am not sure which models have this water to oil cooler or if its even on all the 6spd automatics, if you have a trans oil to radiator set up you can tap the feed going in there, this has to be the cheapest remedy to this fluid level issue, short of just taking it to the dealership, "as a skilled mechanic and engine enthusiast i will not go to dealership" This allows us to change our own fluid and check the level at the proper temperature according to the Toyota TSB

Update: i have confirmed with several other mechanical technicians and my Toyota dealer technician that this method WILL do the trick, tap the feed to the cooler closest to transmission add correct size tee with 1/8 NPT for oil temp sensor and bang, problem solved. if you do not have an external water / oil cooler, usually the radiator has its own trans cooler built in and you can tap the line going in there. i will update when i install parts and compare my temp on the gauge to the tech stream temp at Toyota.

So I messaged the seller and they told me it won't work on the 2018+ so i didn't buy it, ive tried like 5 different scanners so I gave up, however I installed the gauge it works great. Here is my write up from another forum for anyone in need of a cheap solution.

Obviously the temp has to be between 104° and 114°F and on a level surface to check, pull the plug any excess is overfill, check TSB to confirm I may be off on temp a bit. Problem is viewing the temp, so i installed an aftermarket trans temp gauge in my glove box for $130 ish, tee'd a temp sensor into the cooler feed line. These are the parts i used. I cant afford $1200 techstream software so this is next best thing.

Maxtow double vision 52mm trans temp gauge," comes with sensor and harness"

Esupport 52mm carbon fiber gauge pod

1/8 27 NPT 44re trans temp sensor adapter

3/8" barbed 1/8 27 NPT Tee from GlowShift.

And some elbow grease. I got everything on amazon 2 day shipping with prime. Works great, the gauge has excellent reviews and shows very accurate temp range from 80°f to 260°f in analog and digital, and now I'm confident my trans fluid level in my 18 xle is correct after the flush I did, i also pull a light trailer for work, so now I can keep an eye on my transmission while towing.

There is a product called Scangauge that will give you live transmission temperature. The last time I looked it was $135.00 on Amazon.
There's also the UltraGuage. I bought one for my 2011 Toyota Fj Cruiser and when I bought it, I got the added software package installed on the unit before they shipped it to me that reads more info, like trans temps. It works too.

I went through the support sheet for ultra gauge and it doesnt show any support for Toyota after 2016, I contacted support asking if it works on the 2018+ models. I did this for just about every scan tool on the market and got a no, I'll update with the response they give me, alot of the scan tools claim they work with the 2018 rav but don't. I've tried innova 5510, innova 3310, snap on scan tool, Chinese techstream and dongle, as well as this cheap Amazon bluetooth obd deal. Also tried my buddy's obd scan tool that he swore up and down would work. Got nothing. Alot of these tools work pretty well, they show all live data, everything except trans temp.

Update :

They gave me a link to the faq section,
I have figured out I can't pull trans temp on my 2018 rav4 because its not part of the standard obd 2 protocol on it. according to the faq section on ultra gauge it only supports standard obd2 protocols, it also wont support kwp2000 protocols. So it will do exactly what the expensive scan tool I bought does, show everything but trans temp. I can say, installing the aftermarket gauge is much less of a headache than doing all the testing and research I've done. Buying and returning scanners gets old, especially when its online.
