I was comparing my 2004 Rav4 to other 2004 toyota bigger SUV on www.cars.com. I was amazed to find that all of em have lower Departure angle and similar, a bit higher approach angle!!!!!

Rav4 --- Highlander:
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 28 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 22 deg

Rav4 --- Land Cruiser
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 31 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 24 deg

Rav4 --- Sequoia
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 28 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 20 deg

Rav4 --- Tacoma
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 30 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 23 deg

Rav4 --- Tundra
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 29 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 24 deg

Rav4 --- 4Runner
Off-Road Capability
Approach angle 28 deg--- 32 deg
Departure angle 29 deg--- 24 deg

I was very happy to find that out, cuz people from my high school were telling me to return this one add 10k and get a 4Runner. Now I can laugh at them cuz I get better gas milages, smaller car (fits in more places), well a little bit lower Approach angle.

Note that if your RAV4 has the 235/60R16 tires you lose some ground clearance (down to 6.3" from 6.7"), which brings your approach/departure angles down a tick to 27/28. Still compares well to those other Toyota trucks.

why is that?
the tires are just wider

The 235's are wider but shorter in terms of height. A 215/70R16 tire (std on the RAV) is 0.3-0.4" taller than a 235/60R16 tire. So a RAV with the 215 tires sits that little bit higher off the ground.

Nah, it makes only a tiny difference. I'd say it's really the RAV4's lowish ground clearance that presents the largest obstacle even in light off-roading. My 2000 sits 7.5" off the ground and I was surprised when the 2001 came out that they'd reduced it to as little as 6.3" with the big tires. Probably handles better on the road, however.
