I know there have been dozens of threads on the fuel tank issue, but after reading them all the question has still not been answered, has the issue been fixed at the factories, and if so what VINs forward can new buyers expect the updated fuel tank?

IF you have a new later 2020 or 2021 hybrid with a confirmed updated fuel tank from new please post manufacture date, factory if known, and last 5 of your VIN. Alternatively if you have a 2021 with a known defective fuel tank, please also post the same info. Also if you have definitive inside knowledge of if/when the fix was incorporated at the factory please post what you know. We should be able to work this out.

No discussion on repairs please, there are plenty of threads for that.

The TSB has the information you're looking for. All 2020's made in Canada and Kentucky are potentially affected. 2020's made in Japan might be affected depending on the VIN, which is complex since it depends on your exact trim and the plant it was made at.

What we don't know is how the 2021 model is impacted. The TSB implies that the fix should be done at the factory for all Japan-built vehicles. But when was the fix rolled into production in Canada and Kentucky? Maybe at the model year change, but we don't know. It's theoretically possible that some 2021 vehicles are impacted (there's a thread on the 2021 already), and that might be worth sorting out.

I have a 2020 XSE Hybrid built in Japan in Oct 2019. It definitely has the issue. I have been hounding my dealer since I got it asking if there is a fix yet. I finally got them to say YES last week once they did an inspection to make sure my car was affected. They have received the parts . But, of course, the gas tank is on backorder. They think they should get the tank next week. I do believe there are like 5 pieces they are going to replace. I hope this fixes the problem! I would contact your dealer and ask them about it as they didn't contact me for the fix, I had to ask them.

Mine was built 7/20 in Japan. I’ve refilled 7 or 8 times now - so far so good. My VIN falls outside the range in the TSB posted above, so based on that I expect my positive experience thus far to continue.

At this point, I think only Toyota knows these answers. My suspicion is that Toyota won't willingly divulge all of the specific VIN information because they know that many RAV4 owners are unaware of the problem and thus will not report it.

The question has been answered several times. Read the latest TSB as it states exactly which builds and VIN's are affected.

None of this is important.

Stock price and dividend. THAT is all that counts.

I would postulate that some early 2021s could possibly be affected as Toyota moved to address this prior to October. If you are concerned, the TSB shows the VINs affected. Verify the vehicle you are considering falls outside the VINs of concern. We can only extrapolate based on what we can gather through documents like TSBs. Its not like Toyota is going to post something that says “All the ones on this side are good to go, all the ones on this other side are not”.

Mine was built June 2020 in Japan and required a new sending unit per vin/TSB. Took 2 hours to replace. Odd thing when I left the distance to empty was the same. I was at a half tank and could only get 5 gallons in. I wanted to top it off and use the full tank. Will wait until the gas light comes on again and see if I can get over 12 gallons in because in the past I could get maybe 11-11.5 gallons in before with the light on.

If the purpose of your discussion is to buy a new car without the gas tank issue, simply buy one with a build date in the past month or so. Better yet, wait until the summer if you can, chances are there will be a mid cycle refresh as Rav 4s have been refreshed on the 4tth year of past models,

If you are looking for definitive information that the gas tank fix actually works in a new car or a retrofit, I think you will need to give it more time. For example, I am only on my second fill since my retrofit. Unfortunately I was not able to wait until the low fuel light to come on to refuel so could not fuel from reserve to full. Due to Corvid, I am driving less so it will take me a while to know if the fix has worked. I suspect others are driving less as well.

So far I have not heard anyone over at the Prime forum complain of the issue. If you are in a state where you can get a Prime, perhaps consider one?
