My 99 Corolla has a chain driven camshaft, it was the first year that they did without the timing belt .
I can't find any information on the 4 cylinder Rav4 engine.... does it come also with a chain instead of a belt? A salesman told me that it didn't have a belt but I am "slightly" skeptical of sales people.

Thanks

The Rav4s switched from a timing belt to a chain in the 2001 model year.

I agree but........
Do we ever need to replace the chain?

Yes, the chain and guides, but that is not until it starts rattling, which usually doesn't happen till way past 100K miles.

My father's GMC Yukon has the 350 SB with a timing chain, and it has over 200K miles on it with the original chain.

Yeah timing chains are 'lifetime parts' for most people. Only need to replace if they go out of spec, which is usually well after a number of other things have gone wrong and the average person has gotten rid of the car.
